I have had the privilage of playing a few sets of his in addition to a number of chanters, both D and C.
The chanters were both bold and sweet in tone and easy to reed. The drones are killer solid with a deep rich tone. His D pipes are bold in tone by their nature, but I happen to like that in a concert set. Probably why I love the work of the Taylors… beyond the look of 'em.
Yes, I own a deluxe half set in D by Tim. There are amazing. The Drones are so rich, powerful, deep, and stable. They are my favorite set of drones that i have had the chance to play. His chanter is also wonderful. It is top notch craftsmanship and is spot in tune. He normally makes is pipes alittle louder than most, but he reeded mine to be quieter. The chanter has tons of tone qualities that some of the other chanters i have played do not have. You can really do some whacky stuff on his chanters. In summary, I love me Britton set. I couldn’t be happier. I will have to thank our moderator JES, he was the one that really coonvinced me to get a good quality set.
Tim makes unique, one of a kind pipes. I have a 1/2 set(soon to be 3/4) in C. It has great tone, came with 2 chanter reeds that work great.I live in Colorado, just to get a reed to work here is a feat in itself. I was able to build a reed that worked well on my 1st try. The drones are steady as a rock and have a wonderfull warm tone with a seperate lever to cotrol the extra G drone. These drones have a trombone slide tuning feature that will allow me to tune them down to B. Now with a B chanter I have both a C & B set in one. Tim is great to work with and built my set custom to meet my needs. He offers many modern features that I couldn’t get elsewhere. The hand turned bells on the drones are fantastic. No hockey puck. I am thoroughly satisfied, and eagerly await delivery of my regs.
To each his own. My Rogge set has a hockey puck and I like it well enough. I also like diversity and find the hollowed bell with a cap performs outstanding as well as being artistically beautiful.
Thanks for all the input. It has helped make my decision about ordering a new set of pipes a little easier.
I didn’t know that Tim made knives as well. That’s pretty cool. Perhaps they are a pipe and knife all in one - kinda like those super Swiss Army knives with about million tools.
I guess one would have to be careful around the razor sharp edges as you reached to play the regulators!
Uilleann Piper (Ill-un Py-pur) def. 1. One that plays traditional Irish bagpipes 2. One that owns a set of traditional Irish bagpipes and knows how to strap them on who is then allowed to strap them on to clear out the pub at closing time. See also: Violent ne’er do well.
