i started out on the button accordion about 9 months back. i don’t have the basics yet, but i’ve got a good hold of it, and i play with one strap
i don’t think there’s many sites, i could only find this:

what do you play Jay??
i play some D box (one-row and C#/D), though mostly i play mandolin and tenor banjo these days. TeriK plays the B/C, Ro3b plays both C and D boxes i believe. i’m sure there are a few more.
there are a couple of email lists you might be interested in, both are on Yahoo.

both have been a little quiet of late, though.
There are a handful of us around here. At least that’s all that have come out of the closet.
Why the query… have some good jokes to share?
No jokes - closet dwellers are safe here with me, honest!
Just picked up a Hohner 12 bass piano accordion and I’m having great fun with it. So logical - and so in tune!
Thought it might be nice to find others so I can get a bit of input about what to go for next - fancy a 72 bass. Won’t move over to button though.
I’m afraid that piano accordian players will be even more scarce around here than button box players.
There’s a great website with links to all things accordion that may help:

Unless, of course, we could possibly sway you to try the button box

I play mostly one-row D box but I haven’t been spending much time on it lately (got side-tracked with flute and tenor banjo). I don’t have a nice accordion right now which also makes it less tempting (I do have a nice flute).
I’m on the lookout for a good one-row box in D and will probably snap one up off eBay or something in the near future and spend some more time on it.

Well, I know I’m bucking the trend - sorry and all that - but I’m going to stick with the piano accordion.
I’ve gained a bit of keyboard knowledge over the years and the start I feel that gives me compared to the unknown button layout is too valuable to waste, imho.
Anyway, look what a great fist the likes of Karen Tweed and Alan Kelly make of it!
Have a little chat with jbarter and his Son…there is a huge Piano key floating about there…only up the road a bit in good old Lincolnshire..
Slan,
D.
Thanks. I’ll pm him.
i don’t play it, but a good friend of mine does, wanna check out his website?
http://www.brechin-all-records.com/
and a very old site of his, but you can listen to an entire cd:

Jay-eye,
Hans Palm has a page for piano accordion with lots of information and a message board http://www.accordionpage.com/
Great links, folks.
My thanks to you all.
I want to play.
Get out your checkbook.
Sandy Brechin is incredibly good. Tweed, Lowthian, Brechin…no waltz-kings here, just sheer genius!

I play a Saltarelle C#/D, also have a Mengascini D box.
Just attended Jackie Daly’s workshop in East Durham where he beat us like baby seals.

I played the asccordian for years ..took it up due to the fact that I was used to the piano…and i had some good chord theory…loved it but havn’t plyed or owned one for a few years…never did find out though what the difference was between button acoordians and the piano one…it does seem to me, now i’ve taken up Irish trad on the whistle, that some type of button accordian is more acceptable to trad music…what is the principle of playing a button one though…and am i right about the button job being more acceptable to Irish trad. Thanks in anticipation . I did become quite good on the piano accordian and have been tempted to take it up again for some Irish trad but is it no acceptable? Again thanks in anticipation…Les.

Les,
The same rules govern the acceptability of any instrument in Irish music, piano accordions included. If the instrument is played well, isn’t too loud and complements the playing of others, it’s acceptable. There are quite a few very well respected PA players in Irish music. Karen Tweed, Alan Kelly, Jimmy Keane, to name a few.
There are plenty of button box players who transgress on the above counts. If you can already play the PA, I wouldn’t suggest torturing your neural circuits with any variety of button box. They are simply too perverse. Speaking as one who is trying to learn to play one.
