Another Olwell Sold on Ebay today..

High bid went for $1525 +$20 shipping for a 5 year old keyless D “Pratten” style (Blackwood). Yikes. I should have invested in Olwells instead of the stock market!

Matt

Yup. Keyless Olwells routinely sell for $15-1600 on eBay, and one once sold for $2700, because two people REALLY wanted it.

Well, but you’d only get the one. If you started selling them I doubt Pat would ever sell you another.

But still, SOME return would be better than the stock market . . .

Stuart

Agreed on both replies. I was just musing a bit, thinking how it seems odd (to me at least) the premiums paid for a used contemporary flute when the wait is only a year or so for shiny new Olwell and less for a Copley or Hamilton. I wonder if the “I want it right now” market is small or is Patrick so far ahead of his peers and just undercharging what the broader market would bear.

I think he’s undercharging. Seriously. He hasn’t gone up in price in a loo-hooo-hoooong time as far as I can tell. And he can be really quick with the keylesses.

Keylesssssessssessesssses.

His flutes have an extraordinary reputation.

I think the “I want it now” factor coupled with “I also happen to have the money available” factor is a reason folks are prepared to pay more than a maker’s current set price. Supply and demand. Granted a years wait isn’t that long, especially if you already have a flute to play on in the meantime, but take a high end maker such as Chris Wilkes, Chris is working on his keyed flute orders so it seems there will be a 6-7 year hiatus before new keyless Wilkes flutes become available. Those that really want a keyless Wilkes and can get the money together will undoubtably do so rather than wait 6-7 years. Plus such a high quality instrument as a Wilkes flute is a sound investment that, if looked after, will give a lot of pleasure for a few generations. I see there is a Wilkes keyless flute up for sale now for a reasonable price.

Actually, Pat HAS gone up in price, but only a little, in the last several years.
