I have a couple of lovely antique boehm flutes, one of them a Rudall Carte, and simple system nach Meyer, which is a bit less lovely and I’d like to try something better. Recently an Aebi has popped up on a local auction site, but I have a feeling that the owner doesn’t know that much about it. He’s posted some photos and describes the flute, which is cocus and silver, as having B as its lowest note. It looks to me like a D flute with a B foot. Has anyone here had experience with a flute like this?
It does indeed look to be a D flute (9-key BTW) with a low B key included, and made of African Blackwood (not cocus wood). Perhaps you should verify with Thomas Aebi that the seller is the actual owner.
Absolutely. Do you know if Aebi flutes have serial numbers or am I best to email Tom with the listing? I am awaiting the answer to a question I have posted about the listing and I will need to see something about provenance.

I have sent the listing to Tom. Will let you know the result.
It looks similar to an 8-key Aebi Rudall-type flute I previously owned, but mine was cocus wood and had thread-wrapped tenons. It was a very well-made flute with excellent intonation and a sweet tone. I only replaced it after finding another flute – a Peter Noy “Nicholson” – with a tiny bit more volume and “edge” for pub sessions.
Sometimes I wish I’d kept the Aebi, but I needed the money at the time. Anyway, I can’t tell how this one sounds or plays, but I can vouch for the build quality at least.
I have an Aebi 8-key and it’s a great flute. I was just in Switzerland and visited Tom and tried a B foot on my flute. Worked great though would take some getting used to, you have to press all three keys at once. In general, Tom makes great flutes, well in tune with a lovely tone.
Many thanks all. It seems genuine and a reluctant sale. So I await the courier.
