Aren’t the tone holes a little big for a flat chanter?

Aren’t the tone holes a little big for a flat chanter?

Maybe a bit bigger than other designs but large tone hole “flat” chanters are not a new thing as neither are wide bore C chanters.
One time I was chatting to pipe-maker John Lambe who was thinking of designing a wide bore C chanter. I told him to go to a certain person who had a wide bore C made by Willie Rowsome. John was gutted, he thought he came up with a great new idea but it had been around for 100/120 years already.

Those Ginsberg pipes certainly look like fine instruments. I was just listening to a cassette of London piper, John Murphy from the Willie Week one year and his Ginsberg set are sounding mighty.

Thanks, Tommy. Ya learn something new every day.

Indeed they do. I’d love to hear a set first-hand.

Cheers,
Mark

The prices aren’t too bad for fullsets I need money.

Has anyone here bought one of the previously listed “new” Ginsberg sets from Ebay? What was the playing quality?

Alans “flat” chanters are based upon Matt Keirnan’s but whether Matt copied another maker or came up with the slightly larger tone holes I do not know.

As an example here are some basic measurements for a Matt Keirnan Bb

Overall Length 470 (18.5")

Bore - Throat is 3.9 at 12.7 from the top end. Bottom end is 11.

Tenon into the stock is 31.75 long with Outside Diameter 14

Outside diameters are 16 at back d and 21 at the Ghost D.

Measurements are from the end of the tenon i.e. 31.75 from the top end.

d - 116 / 5.55 dia
c# - 136.5 / 4.7 dia
b - 168.25 / 5.55 dia
a - 205.5 / 6.35 dia
g - 250 / 4.76 dia
f# - 285.75 / 6.35 dia
e - 322.25 / 3.9 dia
eb - 358.75 / 4.7 dia
