Tunes for work on A and B rolls?

Post by bigsciota »

I'm starting to like where my G, F#, and E rolls are, but my A rolls are not great and my B rolls are terrible. I tend to like to work on passages from tunes rather than separate exercises (eg I work on the B part of Humours of Tulla for F# rolls), and would love some suggestions of tunes with a lot of opportunities for A or B rolls (or both). I've been going through my session recordings and albums looking for good ones, and am working on the Em Toss the Feathers for B rolls, but any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks!

Tell us something.: I am an Irish flute player and whistler. I have been a member since 2007? This has been one of the most informative sites on Irish flute I have found.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

The Ravelled Hank of Yarn for both A and B rolls. Second to none as a practice tune for these aspects IMO.

Ledsam and Hannigan's "Low Whistle Book" has a version of "Melancholy Martin" with rolls on every rollable note in the first octave.

If you have difficulty with L hand rolls, look to your hold. Simply banging away at practicing them won't solve the problem and may worsen it because of tension. If you get your flute support right, all your fingers should be equally free to move and the L hand rolls should be just as easy as the R hand or between hands ones.
I respect people's privilege to hold their beliefs, whatever those may be (within reason), but respect the beliefs themselves? You gotta be kidding!

Thanks, some of these I know, a couple I don't I'll work on all of them. I think the issue is related to what Jem said- I had (and sometimes still have) a lot of tension in my left hand. I've worked it out (mostly), but it's a relatively recent phenomenon so I'm not yet comfortable with the rolls in that hand. Mostly it's getting them in a consistent rhythm, so I've been practicing them slow. I like the tunes because I find it helps to play in and out of them, not just practice them in a vacuum.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Ive tried and tried to do B rolls with the standard grip, but I just can't get the freedom that I get with pipers grip, where the rolls are very natural to me. Too long in the tooth I fear.
