Cian Talty's Harrington

Post by Steampacket »

Cian Talty is playing his Harrington here.

Nice sounding pipes. The chanter, tenor and baritone regs ends don't look very elegant though. Has this Harriington been shortened at some point in time and new pieces stuck on the bottom of the two regs and chanter later to bring it back down to original pitch?

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

Upper octave notes seem a bit flattish to my ear as well. Could just be an off day though.

"Sounds lovely to me - lovely pulse" Ged.

Yes, Cian plays well and the set sounds nice, especially the drones. Just thought that Geoff Wooff's Harrington looks nicer, more elegant than Cians. Prehaps there were a few years between the making of the sets, or Geoff's is a delux model?

Geoff's seems like a more de luxe one. There has been speculation it may be the one made for the Cork exhibition or at least one very like it. They definitely have a more developed visual aesthetic about them.

I have seen one, maybe two, sets that were supposedly Coyne but had drones that almost certainly were Harry's. Both had a gorgeous buzz off them. None of your tractor coming down the road sound.

Yeah, Tom... 2nd oct is low. If the reed is closing that can happen, but everything else sounds nice and strong enough, so maybe it's (the reed) just in need of that "correction" (via a new reed), but after listening to the entire recording, you can get used to it. Plus, that reed seems to have everything else, so perhaps it's either just the way it is.....?

(wow......and that chanter does sound superb!)

When Cian played at WCSS I think it was 2 years ago, his performance just seemed to be the favourite (the day time concert). It really was great, and those pipes were amongst the most interesting sounding of the lot! Once of the high points of that day.
Give a man a wooden reed and he'll play in the driest of weather,
Teach a man to make a wooden reed,
and the both of ye will go insane!
