Tell us something.: in two words, Rudall & Rose. but since a minimum of 100 characters is required, I should list a number of makers I found extremely interesting… I don't even know how much are 100 characters...

Lightweight aluminum. $9 at Harbor Tool. But watch out for that expansion coefficient!

I see that you both like green shirts, which surely reveals that you shop in Army Surplus stores. No too long ago it was fashionable to measure different aspects of the human head with calipers much like in the photo. It was widely believed that these measurements would yield important information about human intelligence and other human characteristics, an idea which has been discredited, especially after the abuses of these ideas (eugenics) by Nazi Germany.

Technically, phrenology/craniometry and eugenics are two separate issues, and not necessarily linked.

For example, one could be fascinated by the obviously bizarre size of Casey's skull without wanting to create an entire race of super-Caseys. In fact, I think super-Caseys are explicitly banned by the United Nations charter.

As for the coefficient of expansion ... All known attempts to determine this value for flutemakers' heads have met with failure. The measuring equipment simply doesn't go that high.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I'll take a Rod action flute and a simple Casey for it.

Casey may win on size, but Rod's got the honker.

Come on people! You are getting confused by the perspective and the distortion! Objects in view may be larger or smaller than they appear.

If that's how makers come to look, I'm staying out of the workshop...

See Mahalanobis distance. Something useful came from measuring skulls.
