Bagpipe Training Course

Post by bernez »

Hi,

As I want to try to learn the bagpipe, I'd found this tutorial on ebay.
Does somebody know or used this tutor's DVD ?

Thanks,

Bernez

somehow,
I just don't think you would be onto a good thing with that listing, bernez. :)

best to go the "tried & true"" route, finding a local pipe band, or piper,
& getting lessons from them.

It's very likely that there are several in your area. Good luck!

Have no idea. But the bombastic hyperbole of the description - "My success rate is staggering!!" - registers 11 on my Skeptic-ometer.

With the pedigree he's claiming as a piper (taught by Captain John A. MacLellan, whose name he can't spell), it might well be great. But you should be able to find good reviews from reputable independent sources if it is. And, even if it is...

1. You might be able to copy what he's doing but his DVDs can't tell you if you're copying right.
2. MTGuru's comments on hyperbole are spot on and the piper doth protest too much, methinks.

The bombastic hyperbole of the description (as MTGuru wrote) was my reason to ask your opinions.
But, I know enough now !

Thanks to all for your input,

Bernez

For the price you don't have much to lose.

But you really can't learn highland piping without some real world interaction with someone who can play.

Thanks highland-piper,

I'm sure a real teacher would be great, but I don't know any local pipe band, or piper not too far from where I'm located. See my location

Bernez,
these 13 bands are involved with the "Holland Massed Pipes and Drums":

Saendistrict Pipes and Drums (Assendelft)
Saint Anthony Pipe Band (Wijk bij Duurstede)
Batavorum Pipes and Drums (Nijmegen)
Graham Lowlanders Pipes & Drums (Leeuwarden)
Clan MacBeth Pipe Band (Groningen)
Beatrix Pipe Band (Hilversum)
Beatrix Juvenile Pipe Band (Hilversum)
Clan Lamont Pipeband (Waalwijk)
Herivvarda Pipes and Drums ( Heerewaarden)
Red Rose of Lochbuie Pipes & Drums (Rijswijk)
The Seaforth Highlanders of Holland, Memorial Pipes and Drums (Voorthuizen)
Lowland Brigade Pipe Band (Zwolle)
The Dutch Pipes and Drums (Tilburg)

but my guess is there are even more than these, I know of a Pipe Band in Almelo not mentioned in this list.
Also, I'm sure there are plenty of pipers all over the country who don't play in a band - the problem is, finding them.
Anyhow, one of these bands MUST be near enough to you, and most likely can help you to get started. You should be prepared that they will probably expect you to join the band and do gigs with them, when you're good enough.
P.S.: Avoid anything on Ebay that's being described as "Fantastic"...

Thanks guys,

The 'Lowland Brigade Pipe Band' in Zwolle would be the closest (30 min ride).
I will see if they can help me.

Thanks again,

Hope you can find someone. It's amazing how things work out though -- maybe one of the people in one of those bands lives in your town. Not long ago a legendary piper moved to about 20 minutes from my house.

If worst comes to worst, you can get lessons on skype. They can't help with things like seeing how hard your reed is or trying out your pipes to see if they are playable, but at least they can keep you from going too far off the track in your fingering.
