What kind of bagpipe is this one?

Post by QWERT »

Hi everyone!

I wanted to know the name of the bagpipe played in this song:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xhu10q4xvM

Does anyone know what type of bagpipe is that?

I know this band uses electronic bagpipes (redpipes, model Avalon) most of the times, and I think they used them in this tune too. According to the redpipes' website, the Avalon model imitates the sounds of the following bagpipes:
-Great Highland Bagpipe
-Medieval bagpipe
-French Cornamuse/Shepherd's Pipe
-Hümmelchen
-Galician gaita

I think it might be either the medieval bagpipe, the French cornamuse or the Galician gaita, though I'm not sure. I'm familiar with the sound of the Highland bagpipe, and it doesn't sound like the one used in the song. The Hümmelchen is too low, so it can't be.
Any ideas?

Thanks!

You've answered your own question, no? If the band is using electronic Redpipes, then it's not a bagpipe. As for the emulation, the introduction sounds more or less like a Scottish GHB (Great Highland Bagpipes) chanter, played with throws. The pitch is like GHB in A, but with a Dorian instead of Mixolydian scale tuning. The exact sound may be heavily altered, because Redpipes are not bagpipes. The only way to be sure is to ask the band, or ask the makers of the Redpipes.

This is the second time you've posted about this band here. Do you listen to anything else?

Yes, I do. I'm just curious about the bagpipes used by this band because there's not much information about it. If there wasn't information about, let's say, Irish tunes performed on Uilleann pipes or other bagpipes, I would ask about it. But I can find information about it, so I dont ask. Maybe someday if I can't find information regarding an irish bagpipe tune I will ask here, but at the moment, I don't need to.

And if you don't like it, then go (bleep) yourself.

Then here is a suggestion for you, QWERT. It is not a good idea to answer a question about what other music you listen to by telling the Moderator of the forum to "go (bleep) yourself".

Good luck in your musical career. And Bye-Bye.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Hello

I love Eluveitie so I know a little about this band ;)

In memento (album version) we can hear medieval bagpipe in A minor/G major made by Jens Güntzel.
Here you can read Pade's post on Eluveitie forum -> http://forum.eluveitie.ch/viewtopic.php ... f83647ce1b

This tune is oryginaly arrangerd and played in unison of medieval bagpipe, violin, hurdy gurdy and propably whistle, so we hear mosty conjunction of those instruments sounds.

QWERT - If you have any questions about Eluveitie, go ahead send me PM!
