Help-My "B" Is Sharp

Post by redhairedboy »

I built a guido's pvc Low D pipe and used our hole calculator to place and size holes for this 6-hole low D whistle.
It sounds pretty good starting with the low octive D and acsending up the scale until I play the B-note (or the first 5 holes open, only the 6th hole closed). I have checked my air volume and this note seems to fluctuate on me a bit depending on my blow. What is the standard whistle adjustment to flatten this position just about 40 cents or so.
Thanks brad

Conventionally, the holes are numbered from top to bottom, fipple-end to bell-end. So the B is first hole closed, last 5 holes open.

Carry on. :-)

(If the B is sharp, you need to tape/putty/wax the #2 hole a bit, no? Or start over ...)

If you're happy with the overall tone of the instrument, salvage the head end of the whistle, fit a coupler, and drill a new tube. You could even make it into a 3-piece whistle (for portability), with two couplers, then you'd only need to re-drill a new top section. Fortunately plastic tube is cheap, so accidents/mistakes like this are best treated as learning opportunities :)

Wasn't someone here offering a supply of movable / removable holes a while back?

Or you can tether your motorcycle throttle to your top middle finger, so the bike moves away from the listener when you lift the finger. :-)

Correct. There are several ways to plug the hole and drill a new hole.

Building these was kind of my way of learning aobut these beasts, and what makes them "tick." Pletny of good wisdom and experience you folks have given me. Important thing, is now when I am ready to buy one made by a pro maker I understand a lot of the stuff, and I can better buy to suite my desire. I will make a few more since I have the materials, and have aleady sound down a portion of hardwood dowel for fipple blocks.
Thanks, brad

If only one note/tonehole is sharp, reduce the diameter of the tonehole to flatten pitch. If the entire scale is sharp, reduce the internal diameter by gluing a strip of PVC inside the bore opposite the toneholes.

Don't buy that bridge unless you see it in person first. I bought a bridge a while back that was described as "well-maintained and with plenty of good years left." I'm trying to resell it but I can't get a nibble.

Moveable holes are great until you spill them on the floor.

And then when the small ones fall into the larger ones what a mess. Handle with care.
