Cap off the main stock?

Post by Johnered66 »

What is the best way to cap off the main stock if you were to turn your set to a practice set? Is there a standard cork size or another way to close it off? Thanks.

There are different ways main stock cups are constructed - some are just a big brass tube directly tied into the bag, others are lined with wood and/or have a smaller air inlet in which case a big cork can fit.
The best way is to turn a wooden plug which fits your stock cup nicely (but don't overhemp it...).

Depending on the ID of the stock, you may be able to get an expanding rubber plug from the hardware store (Home Depot, etc).
You know the rubber plumbing plugs with a screw in the center to squeeze the plug and tighten it.

4"cork stoppers are the largest on that site;
try also:

I'm sure theres some kind of easliy available (homeD or Lowes) plumbing cap that would fit around the outside, securable by a large hose clamp.
OR for a foolproof fix, (my preferred approach)
to turn your full or half set into a practice set,
buy an additional bag, and blowpipe & chanter stocks,
cut & tye acordingly

I used a tupperware container that I found in the grocery store that fit my mainstock with just a little wrapping with some linen thread.

A hockey puck will work. . .but get it free! They'd be too expensive to buy. I got mine from a ref.

I use a tapered cork "borrowed" from a kitchen jar, like the one below. It's about 2 1/8 inches (55 mm) in diameter at the narrow end. Seals nice and tight, but easily removable. My cup is a simple brass tube tied directly into the bag.

I stick a lambic cork in the hole that goes into the bag.

I find this little gadget absolutely perfect fer whit ye desire.
In addition to plugging the unknown diameter of the hole ye are writing aboot!!.
ye will have the added advantage of being able to tell at a glance whit pressure ye have in the bag and at the more boring sessions a baloon can be inserted into the other end to entertain yerself whilst the other musos are in their own wee world....

So Liam, have you gone all the way and tried helium? Just connect the tank to your blowpipe, no need for all that nasty bellows-pumping. Then when you blow up the balloons, they float around the room nice and jaunty and distract everyone from yer awful playing. Plus, the helium takes your pipes up an octave, so you can play lovely duets with the pennywhistles and piccolos.

Some stock cups are just the right size to be stopped with a tennis ball. Worth checking...
