Good ITM on non-trad but apt instruments
Jordi Savall's Celtic Viol springs to mind, as does Gavin Pennycock's Celtic Nyckelharpa. Anyone have any other candidates?
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I've played in a couple of sessions with Dan when he's been playing Khene. He's great. I think I've come across yer nyckelharpa man too. That one just isn't for me. Personal tastes 'n' all ...

I just typed the one word "Celtic" into YouTube. I wish I hadn't.

Hmmm ... I'd never heard of Jordi Savall before. I've just found a couple of vids of him. Several with him and a viol consort, playing Baroque music absolutely exquisitely. Beautiful, it is.
And one or two (so I suppose I haven't given him much of a chance) apparently taken from "Celtic Viol". The ones I found came across exactly as one would expect from a person with no Celtic background, but a strongly classical background, making a CD of "Celtic" music. From what I've heard - which, as I say, is not much - I'd put his "Celtic" stuff about on a par with Celtic Woman.
PS For some real fun, have a look over at the discussion of "Celtic Viol" over on the session.org. I think they took the word "viol" and added "tri" little letters ...

I have one of these - they're pretty nice, but limited range (about 1 1/2 octaves) and no tuning. Lotta fun, though! (It's a Mountain Ocarina, btw, in case you didn't see the ad at the bottom of the vid). Took one on a camping trip and was quite successful in completely annoying my campmates! One of them said "anything but Garry Owen", so of course...

I was listening to some classical stuff the other day, and it occurred to me that the oboe could sound nice playing ITM. I haven't actually heard this yet, though.

Karl (Mountain Ocarinas) is great to deal with, and he makes very nice inline ocarinas. I have a C and G Poly, a C aluminum, and a G warmstone... all fine instruments. I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for a nice, fun, easy to carry alternative to a whistle.

I think the guitar is a great example of a non-trad instrument that can be quite apt providing, IMO, it is finger or harp style playing and avoids the strumming stuff.
