Altan Frankie Kennedy Tune

Post by paddyams »

Who can tell me the names of the other tunes on track 4 of Altan's 'Altan' album. It's titled "The cat that ate the candle" but that's just the first tune - there are two more on this track. Anyone know? Thanks!

The album lists the second tune as "Over the Water to Bessie".

The third tune, not listed, is identified on TheSession by Kenny H. as a setting of "Dandy Denny Cronin". There's also a transcription there as "Frankie Kennedy's".

A friend gave me a bunch of old vinyl LP's he was done with last year, as he was going digital....a year ago my wife and daughter gave me my first ipod, so I'm doing the same, BUT...that was one of the LP's in the bunch, and now I've got the digital version, and it's just such a superb recording. That set is the basis for my current Frankie obsession, and if anyone can tell me how to get that huge, effortless, hollow, powerful tone I'll rain down good kharma on you and yours. He makes it sound so effortless and it's not. Not when i do it anyway.

Tell us something.: I play fiddle, concertina, flute. I live in NH. Lived in Kilshanny, Co Clare, for about 20 years. Politically on the far left. Diet on the far right (plant-based fundamentalist). Musically in the middle of the pure drop.

I love this.

And I can't say it's anything but true.

It's proven true in other areas of my life.

Hmmm...

I guess I got 5000 hours to go and I'm still obsessed with this damn piece of wood with holes in it and having a helluva good time getting there.

Okay, I guess I deserved that, BUT, there are lots of people that have played for thousands and thousands of hours who don't sound like Frankie Kennedy....when I hear him I just think 'wow'.

I'm very well acquainted with the 10,000 hour idea, and agree with it....I'm a journeyman cabinetmaker, trained by cabinetmakers, and now I train cabinetmakers. In this country formal apprenticeships in the wood trades are generally 8,000 hours, and 10,000 to 12,000 is what we look for in people qualifying through a less formal structure. I know from personal expereince that it takes that many hours in my field for it all to start coming together.

This one's pricey, but worth every penny if you like Frankie's playing:

Pretty much perfect. (even with nascent frillery ;-) )
