I just received my chanter with third octave D key on it. Can anyone explain how I would use it ( fingerings) etc.

On many chanters this is also a "second octave c#" key.
Usually you would play up to second octave b, using two fingers for that note, then open the key for C# (leaving the 'b' fingers open) and lift the top finger for d3 (while holding the key open). Depending on your chanter, reed, and weather conditions, you may find that tuning is better with more or fewer fingers open below the top open hole - being able to choose alternates "on the fly" is an important skill.
