If Martin started playing at 17, It gives me some kind of hope that you can become a proficient player even when starting "late".

I'm 43 and only started playing two years ago Right after I started playing, Gay McKeon was over during Irish - Newfoundland Week to give a talk and recital. He spoke about how it's great to get young kids started early on the pipes and, of course, he mentioned the 21 year rule to becoming a piper. I couldn't resist asking him if "there was any hope for me at starting at age 40?" I'm sorry I can't remember his exact response, but for those who know Gay it would certainly have been both diplomatic and humorous!

Sorry not a very good story but I just wanted to share.
