Womens purses and a question for men

Post by susnfx »

I'm going to get very personal here...In my purse (handbag, whatever you call it where you are) at the moment I have:

Wallet with my checkbook, ID, etc.
Very odd small zippered bag where I carry my cash
Cell phone
Gloves
Small notebook for sketching when waiting at appointments, etc.
Small calculator
Address book
Pack of gum
Watch waiting for me to remember to buy a battery for it
Zippered pouch with things like dental floss, eye drops, aspirin, that type of thing...
Sunglasses

Now, I use these things all the time and they stay in my purse because I never know when I'll need them. My question for men is: where the heck do you keep all this stuff?????

I have a go-bag, which looks a bit like a bike messenger bag. Wallet, specs, checkbook, bills, stamps, thumb drive, coughdrops, digital camera and binos (for bird-watching). It really is like a purse but it aint girly looking. There's your answer. I carry a purse-like thing, but just to work and back. The thing I like about is that if there were a fire or other disaster, I could grab it and go. To me, this is an advantage women have by carrying purses. The disadvantage is being saddled with it, but for me, its only on the commute.

Where do we carry that stuff? Often, we don't. (Or I don't.)

I have my wallet, which contains my credit cards, cash, insurance cards.

Cell phone and keys in my pants pockets or coat pocket.

Didn't know people wrote checks anymore  ; my checkbook is at home, and I write exactly one check per month (car payment). Other banking is done online, mostly. I guess if I need anything else, I either wait until I get home, or gather it as required.

Like Weeks, I like to have access to a set of binoculars, but I just keep a pair in the car.

I like being relatively unencumbered, but I can see where having a little sack of essentials might come in handy. Keep thinking I should put together one of those earthquake-preparedness kits for the car. Keep not getting around to it. Oh well.

I keep my wallet, phone, and keys in my pockets, but I also carry a back-pack with my laptop, iPod, chargers, whatever book I'm reading, a binder of sheet music (although I'm trying to learn by ear more), loose change, gum, and whatever else I may need that particular day.

Um, isn't that what the wallet's for?

I usually wear cargo or carpenter pants so I have an extra pocket for my cell phone.

Uh, I guess my desk drawer at work and my car's glove box cover that.

The advantage of the go-bag is that it carries stuff you shouldn't leave in your car if you live in a crime-prone area. Having lost a pair of expensive specs when my car was stolen, which insurance wouldn't cover, that was an inducement. I also lost an Obrain tweaked Feadog, so I also carry a whistle at all times in said bag. Another inducement. Come to think of it, ever since the car theft I really don't leave anything of value in the car, ever, even at home (that's where car was swiped from).

Cargo pants are great but I have never gotten used to the long version, just the fat boy shorts that I wear all summer. Those are great for sunglasses-n-wallet and such, but I wear jeans during the winter. Not enough pocket space atall.

string or nothing.

My purse is not a purse, but rather a small, streamlined Patagonia backpack.
It generally contains:
My wallet, which is long and fat and loaded with cash, cards, stamps, and all those dumb little discount things for Office Depot, the grocery store, etc.
sunglasses/case
regular glasses/case
digital elph camera, spare battery
checkbook
address book
a small "idea" notebook, very small.
comb, ponytail thingies
a small directional compass (my kids think I'm an intractable geek.)
lip balm, matches, bandaids
a small pill box w/ Excedrin and Tylenol
The electronic gate card to the community beach
tissues
writing implements
keys

I usually put my gloves in my coat pockets, and my cell phone (which is also a pda) in my coat or pants pocket.

I have a tote bag containing reading material, my working notebook for current writing project, writing implements,
and knitting (on circular needles) which will eventually be a scarf.
This bag comes with me in the car if I anticipate having to do any waiting anywhere.

The amount a person carries varies quite a bit. I have some friends that have a purse that weighs as much as a bowling ball. When pointed out to them, they defend every item packed in there.

Men tend to have pants pockets and will carry, keys, gloves, cell phone and the like in those pockets. Women's outfits sometimes have pockets, many times they do not. Men almost always have pockets unless they are participating in sports.

I carry dental floss, a Swiss Army card (has the basic tools of the knife, but in a credit card form factor), a band aid, all in my wallet. Most men travel with less and depend on others, for tissue, or aspirin, or a pen, or whatever. Often a woman with a heavy purse provides the desired item :)

I joke with one of my male relatives that he needs a purse because he carries too much stuff to fit in his pockets. So far, he has resisted the suggestion to get a "man purse."

Back some years ago, fanny packs were popular. For fashion reasons, it is mostly nerds or tourists that seem to use fanny packs now.

most of the time, I don't have a purse with me.

I usually have a lap top bag (on wheels). Besides all the stuff that goes with the laptop (power cord, LAN cord, mouse, keypad - I hate typing numbers) I have a cord that connects my cell phone (phone is an older one, so no bluetooth), the ear piece for my cell phone, a power cord for my cell phone, a USB printer cable, a locking cable for the laptop, my Sony ebook (great invention!) and the USB cable for it, a couple of flash drives, a securID, an old Palm that has some addresses and things I didn't migrate to the laptop or phone, a scientific calculator, and a mouse pad.

Also in the bag - pens, pencil, highlighter, my wallet, car keys, my Matrix badge for work, comb, chapstick, hand lotion, tylenol, antacid tablets, a small notebook, a fake Leatherman tool, a small Maglite, a water bottle, and any papers or files I may need (most stuff is on the laptop - I don't "do" paper a lot).

If I need to, I may put the wallet and keys in a very small purse, or my coat pocket. My phone is always hanging on my belt.

During the summer, the job I was doing required I also have a label printer (with both USB and LP whatever cords), a barcode scanner with docking base and different size labels (2x0.5" up to 4x6") with me, so I had an additional bag. Don't need that for my current job.

I've never been one to carry a large purse, but got completely away from it when my kids were little. I figured out I wasn't carrying MY stuff - but all of THEIR stuff! I don't need Hot Wheels, Star Wars characters and rocks, thank you very much.

I tend to wear clothes with quite a lot of pockets - combats/cargo pants etc. I have a system!
  • left rear pants pocket - comb (those who know me or who have seen a pic may find this puzzling)
  • right rear pants pocket - vacant
  • left side pants pocket - handkerchief, pocketknife, mandolin picks, nail clipper
  • right side pants pocket - change
  • left leg pocket - bandana, two-piece tin whistle, cell phone
  • right leg pocket - wallet, keyring with keys and tiny LED flashlight
And whether the blood be highland, lowland or no.
And whether the skin be black or white as the snow.

As long as our hearts beat true to the lilt of a song.

Left front pants pocket: wallet (only flat stuff like ID, credit card, paper cash)
Right front pants pocket: keys (house, car and mailbox)

I carry my cell phone in whatever pocket is handy: jacket pocket, cargo pocket (on pants that have them), or left front pocket with the wallet. (In case you're wondering how a wallet and cell phone can comfortably fit in the same jeans pocket, it's because my cell phone is a thin Motorola Razr and my wallet is a super-thin ALL-ETT European model.)

I usually leave my sunglasses in my car. (Don't often need 'em 'round here.)

Here's my rundown:

My watch is on my wrist and my nose holds my glasses up. I have a cell phone and a pen in my shirt pocket.

In my right front pants pocket is my wallet and keys, and possibly some change or sometimes a pocketknife. In my left front pocket is my checkbook and a comb.

That pretty much covers what I need, unless I'm going to play in session, in which case I have a sort of soft briefcase that acts as my "gig bag" and holds my flute, a tuner, and a couple of whistles.
