Review: Hammy's "Wooden Flute Maintenance"

Post by Julia Delaney »

I was recently given Hammy Hamilton's new DVD, "Wooden Flute Maintenance: a practical guide to basic care." It was a great pre-Christmas present. My partner surprised me with it. Hammy posted that he had made this a few weeks ago- the post is further down. I really like the DVD and the basic approach.
Considering how often people on this forum ask about what to do about a crack, or how often to oil, this DVD should answer a lot of questions. Hammy has put together a great DVD on basic flute maintenance. People asking questions about oiling or cleaning or joint-tightening -- the proper care and feeding of a wooden flute -- will find it very useful. Hammy has addressed all of these questions. So when somebody here asks what to do about this or that, you can always say, refer to part three.
It's designed to be played on a computer so you don't have to worry about DVD regions. And you can go from section to section of the DVD without much trouble. It's pretty basic, as the name says- but you can always learn something new. At the price, finding it useful just once will pay for the cost of the DVD. $45 including shipping seems like a fair price to me. And it is a great present- though one of his flutes wouldn't be too shabby either.

Pantomime? No it isn't... Hihi (bicker bicker). The DVD sounds great. Does he show how flutes are made? And how, for example, to repair different parts of it?

Yeah, $45 would be a better deal than ordering from within Ireland!!! - that'd be about Euro 33 (I think Hammy is retailing here at Euro 35). And postage would be costlier to the States - strange :-?

But then, I suppose since you guys started all this recession stuff we ought to go easy on ye!
