For some incredibly bizarre reason TWO nights in the past week I've been awakened with a song running through my head and I can't remember the song name or who sang it. I keep thinking it's Tom Jones, but I know it's not.
I just get snatches of the lyrics...
"Whenever I, whenever I am away from you.....
My alibi is telling people I don't care for you...
With my head up- upside down...."
A friend at work says she thinks it was the Rascals but we can't find it on any of their song lists.
Can anybody put this ghost to rest for me? What's the song and who sang it?

I see I can get the song as a ringtone...since I have it in my head all the time I guess I'll pass.

Whew. What a relief. Now if I could only figure out WHY I'd be dreaming of this song!
Susan
In a world that's constantly changing...
How can I be sure...
Where I stand with you..."
Nah... never listened to that stuff...
Hmmm... maybe it's your way of grappling with tomorrow's events... ?

The Rascals' version is still the de facto standard. As to why you keep thinking of it, perhaps it is attached to some other memory, mood or feeling that is trying to surface, or that some recent experience has touched.
I have the same problem with a 70s tune that haunts me. I can hear the sung part in my head, but could never really make out the lyrics clearly (a lot of songs fly over my head this way). It was only recently that I finally found out what it was. Maybe no-one here remembers it because it was a Canadian tune. Dr. Music - Sun Goes By

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.
