Music Derived from Sarah Palin's Speech
This is cool. No political comments are needed here. I'd rather leave this in the Pub.

- Tell us something.: "Tell us something" hits me a bit like someone asking me to tell a joke. I can always think of a hundred of them until someone asks me for one. You know how it is. Right now, I can't think of "something" to tell you. But I have to use at least 100 characters to inform you of that.

Some posts split off to create a thread in the PROCT forum where people are free to discuss whether the OP was too political for the Pub.

Yes. Someone is improvising based on the inflections in her speech. It's an interesting thing I've heard a couple of musicians do. Maybe the most famous example is Steve Reich's beautiful piece that I mentioned above. He has recordings of Jews talking about riding on trains to the Nazi camps. He picks up on the rhythm and "melody" elements in the their speeches and uses that as the basis of the composition.Cofaidh wrote:Was that piano piece an original composition for the video?

It's very well done. I was wondering if it was maybe programmed. But it does sound "live" to me. I love the little "uh" at 30 seconds in. I'd also like to hear the piano without the words behind it, that'd be interesting.Dale wrote:Someone is improvising based on the inflections in her speech.
I've also heard Steve Vai do this on guitar, matching even little inflections with slides and bends.

Brilliant and fascinating. I've got a good ear for both music and language. But whenever I try this sort of spoken pitch-matching by ear, I fail. It's as if my two different mental subsystems aren't communicating, and they process pitch in very different ways. I do suppose it is something that can be improved by deliberate training.
Nope. So sayeth your Immoderator.Dale wrote:whether the OP was too political for the Pub.
