Stuck common stock

Post by Jose' Scotte' Este' »

The blowpipe stock on my set has come loose, and I need to retie it in, but I am finding the common stock for the drones stuck in the cup. Any ideas on getting the common stock out of the cup so that I can tie in the blowpipe stock more easily? Any suggestions or experience here would be appreciated. I haven't had these pipes for very long, but I am thinking the common stock might have been a little loose when I received them in the winter when it was dry, and I may have put a bit of extra hemp on the stock. I can't remember now. Thanks for any advice/help.

Do you mean the mainstock? If so, the summer heat and humidity will have caused the wood to expand slightly. If you wait a few weeks until the weather gets colder, the mainstock should be a little looser in the stock cup. Alternatively you could try putting the pipes in a cold part of your house. Not too cold obviously - don't put your pipes in the fridge or freezer or anything like that. Make sure you take the drones and regs out of the mainstock and store them carefully before you do this.

It's best to have two people for the job, or a wood vice to grip the mainstock. With one person or the vice holding the mainstock, the other person should twist, not pull, on the joint, to break it loose. I have no problem with refigerating a bag and stocks, less drones and regulators. You can also warm the cup with a hair dryer, used with a light touch, before attempting to break it loose. I have done this many times in more extreme cases.

A few elastic bands around the Cup stock and the main stock will aid a good grip

Or use the piper's own universal solvent/lubricant - Spit on your hands.
