Re: RE: Sheet music, or ABC, for Caoineadh Cu Chulainn ABC
Thread necromancy!
Looks like I'm in a situation similar to Mr. Sky's... need to perform this piece, have picked up the melody just fine by ear but am having a dreadful time puzzling out the chord progression in the 2nd half. Anybody have the chords to this tune?
I've noticed that Caoineadh Cu Chulainn is included in the official Riverdance songbook... does anybody have that book and can confirm whether or not the transcription includes a faithful representation of the chords for this tune?
Pat Sky, can you share what you found?
Thanks!
Daniel Horn

Re: RE: Sheet music, or ABC, for Caoineadh Cu Chulainn ABC
This is approximate for the B part above:
d|"Em7"a2 b2-"C/E"b2 d2|"Em9"a>b"Em7"g2 f2g2|"D"a2d>B "D/C"c2{B}c2|"G/B"Bc/d/ F2 "C"G3d|
"Em7"a2 b2-"C/E"b2 d2|"Em9"a>bg2 d2B2|"C"c4 {dc}B2c2|"Dsus4"d6 ga||
"G"b2"C"c'>b "D"a4|"D/C"f4 "Em"g2f2|"D"d2c2- "C"c/B/c/d/ eA-|"Amsus4"A6 D2||
"F"G2 d4 B2|"C/E"c4 B2G>A|"Em"B2 E2-"D"E2 F2|"C"G4-"Cadd9"G2-"C"G2|z6 D2|
"F"G2 d4 B2|"C/E"c4 B2G>A|"Em"B2 E2-"D"E2 F2|"C"G8-|"Cadd9"HG8|]
The problem is that chord symbols don't really capture the voicings. For example, those first chords are really just ascending 3rds over an Em pedal point:
[EG Bd] [EG ce] [EG df#]
So you're better off looking at the fully specified synth lines. Good luck!

Wow... thanks, MTGuru! That's very helpful... definitely closer than I was getting on my own, and will be a great starting point for us to work on our own voicings.

wow, a lament at a wedding... not a happy start!
Re: RE: Sheet music, or ABC, for Caoineadh Cu Chulainn ABC
HI there, thanks for all the info. I am playing that tune as well.
I think however, the "F" chord should be a "G" chord, the F sounds strange to me.
The split up chords I do not understand, sorry. For which piece are these notes meant, for the very beginning or as a replacement for the chords in the message above? And how many notes of these per bar?
Hope you can clarify that for me, I would really like to give it another go. The ABC melody is very close to the original by the way! Well done, the best version I have found.
cheers
