Hello all, I'm new

Post by Buraqina »

Hi everyone...I *think* I'm posting this in the right section!

Anyway, my name is Laura, and I've just bought my very first Irish whistle and await it's arrival with much anticipation!

I've been playing the Native American style flute for just over a year now and love it to death, though I don't play as much as I'd like to. My progression to whistle has been quite by accident however!

My boyfriend expressed an interest in the instrument, so I've bought him a 'starter set' for his birthday on December 3rd (shh! Don't tell him! ;)) Curious to learn more, I started reading into the instrument and my interest was set loose. Having a quick look on eBay, I found a Feadóg whistle going for a few pounds (about $6 for all you Americans!) and decided to take the plunge. Hey, you can't go wrong for a few quid!

I was also inspired to try the instrument after someone suggested to me that some of my favourite tracks from a certain game that I would dearly love to be able to play may be played on the whistle. I can't wait to find out if I can play them now :D

Well that's all for now...I look forward to meeting you all and learning more around the forum! :)

Welcome!

Don't forget to try to find a pub near you that has a session. There you can find the music in its native habitat...

Welcome Laura! You'll soon find you can't stop at just one...

A couple other UK whistle resources are www.bigwhistle.co.uk and tonydixonmusic.co.uk - I've purchased from both with good results.

Good to have you here. You will find out that one whistle leads to another, to another, to another......it's a slippery slope......

Hi there Laura!

...what game is that?

If you are into NAF, maybe I'll see you at the Bison Farm Powwow, if you can make it all the way to Wiltshire.

There is a Native American Flute Forum around here somewhere...

Ah, there it is: http://www.chiffandfipple.com/naf/

I've found that many film themes can be accommodated on the whistle - that Song at the end of "Spirited Away", for instance.
Happy whistling. Gie them Laldy!

Hi everyone, thanks for your warm welcomes. It's nice to meet you all :)

dyersituations, I doubt there'd be anything like that near me (my town is completely devoid of anything and everything I love :moreevil:) but should I ever get the opportunity I would most definately jump at it!

avanutria, thankyou very much for the links. Have bookmarked them for when the urge for another whistle comes along! In fact I already had a sneaky peek and started thinking I'd like that one, that one, that one, that one...

Innocent Bystander, the game is called "Okami" for PS2.
I'd love to get to a Powwow, I really hope that I might be able to next year. Trouble is I don't drive yet which makes things a tad tricky.
I've been on the NAF forum a while now, there are some very nice and helpful people there :)
And it's good to know the end theme from Spirited Away can be played on the whistle too, I love that film and it's ending music!

Hi and welcome. :)

It's a bit too late at night to really let rip, so am looking forward to tomorrow when I can play without a care in the world :D

Give up the whistle now before it's too late! Take up the harmonica!
