Web hosting?

Post by Flyingcursor »

Hello all,

I want to start a web site for our Kalamazoo Mountain Dulcimer Club.
(three members and growing).

Anyone here have recommendations on web hosts?
Not the freebies like Yahoo or Geocities.
I don't want to use my own sbcglobal tools because I might switch sometime.

I'll need email and applications to help create the site.

Thanks

I would suggest you look locally first. Its going to cost you, but there are lots of web hosting places, now, and if they are local you can go and talk to them face to face.

Many provide tools for building your web site, or professional assistance (for a fee) in setting things up. They know how to get your site name paid for and circulated among the search engines, and how to set up email accounts, etc. I can't give you prices because these seem to be all over the map, but it wouldn't hurt to check to see what is available close to hand.

I've used Parcom for years for my person domain. I've had one glitch since 2000 or so and they took care of it within 1/2 hour. And I'm using their basic service.

Depends on your needs.

winsave is pretty good, and reasonably priced for "Windows hosting."

godaddy is cheaper, but far less user friendly.

It's my opinion - highly regarded (and sometimes not) by me. Peace y'all.

Why don't you want a freebie? I have constructed my website with the free googlepages. The software is easy to use to build the site, and I seem to have plenty of free space to store photos, mp3 audio, or whatever. I like it because it is free, and I can understand how to make changes without having to use a webmaster. OK, my website isn't glamorous, but now and then I do get compliments on its functionality. See WWW icon below, if interested.

Flydood - email Tom for his recommendations or use the form on our website to contact him. He can give you some great suggestions for hosting and talk to you about the programs he uses.

These are all good suggestions. I will look into everything and probably procrastinate.

I like SiteGround.com a lot, and have my pages hosted by them. Extremely fast response to questions/problems---often within minutes. Very cool webpage tools, and they'll install joomba or mambo or wordpress or a php forum etc etc for you for free.

Wow. Sitegrounds looks awesome. A lot of them don't offer site building tools unless you pay more.
I don't want to spend much time on making a site as much as I want to focus on content.

Right now I've gone with Doug Tipple's idea and used Google Pages.
I haven't published the pages yet but will let you know.

Since our club is so new and small I decided to hold off on a pay site until
we get better established.
