I've heard it said from those of clearly lesser station or wits that vermouth makes little differnce.
Its a lie!
I mock them with extreme prejudice!
NP is the only I will use.
Keep in the fridge and your gin the the freezer a long with your shakers and glasses if you can make room.
MAKE ROOM.
I'll also give a nod to Bombay Saphire.
This is serious bid'nis.
I'm serious.
Really.

I was in a swanky cocktail bar recently with a group of friends and not knowing much about cocktails (I usually plump for a white russian and stick with that for a while), one of them decided to order me a vodka martini (shaken not stirred etc). It was horrible! Just tasted like straight vodka, which in my hungover state was not going down very well. Some tonic water left over from another person's gin helped it a bit though.
I have since discovered nicer cocktails (a very good one I had last week contained Tequila, Triple Sec and cranberry juice).

Surely a more accurate name for that would be a Mocha Russian? Seeing as a white russian is vodka, kahlua and cream (or milk in a cheap bar). A black russian is the same but with coke replacing the cream.Eldarion wrote:I have to admit I'm a fan of those girly, flavoured martinis. Haven't tried a real martini though.
One of my favourites:
Mocha Martini
2.5 Oz Vodka
0.5 Oz Kahlua
1.0 Oz Creme de Cacao
Apparently if you add cream to that recipe then it's a russian bride.

Single malt. No ice. = Me being happy.
So does a good ale. Anything over-elaborate or more complicated than it needs to be is, well, over elaborate and more complicated than it needs to be. ;p

Let's get our terminology straight. A martini is gin and vermouth. Concoctions containing other ingredients are not martinis. They are cocktails. (Assuming they have more than 50% spirits, that is; otherwise they're highballs.)
A martini does not taste like chocolate, spearmint, key lime, coffee, bubble gum, cotton candy, marshmallows, or any flavor of jelly bean.
A glass of gin is not a martini. Vermouth serves to round off the harshess of the gin, turning it into something smooth and sensuous and delicious. If you want a glass of gin, what you should be asking for is "gin, neat."
A glass of vodka is even less a martini than a glass of gin. I hesitate to argue with James Bond, but a martini should not contain vodka.
I like a gibson, myself, which is a martini garnished with pickled onions instead of olives. Make it about 3 to 1, please, with Plymouth, Bombay, or Beefeater's gin and Noilly Prat vermouth. Real purists don't like shakers, but I'm ok with them. Chill the glass.
I also like Manhattans: 3 to 1 bourbon (Maker's) and sweet vermouth (Noilly), dash of bitters, garnish with a cherry. Very nice with a good cigar in a dark cozy bar. But a Manhattan is not a martini.
