doublechanter recording

Post by Hans-Joerg »

A friend of mine ( Marc Decker ) played and in his studio recorded my doublechanter for me:

I don´t know who made the chanter. It has two very narrow bores. It has no keyes nor blocks. It is the one that Bill Heaton sold via ebay a couple of years ago. The non-original cap is by Brad Angus who also reeded the stick. As you can hear Brad did a fine job. To fine-tune the parallel tones to each other, you have to smear some wax into each tonehole. So, a doublechanter definitely is nothing to take into a session (I guess the (mega)session-idea came up round the 1960s - not the best thing for pipes anyway).
Here is a pic of the stick:

Nice recording and nice playing. I can't imagine trying to get two reeds to work together, let alone covering all the holes! :o It's a unique sound. I like it (in small doses).

Nice!

Thanks for sharing :)
There's and old Irish saying that says pretty much anything you want it to.

Cool recording and pic, Hans-Joerg. I remember that chanter, it's a nice 'un. If they're built correctly the covering the holes part isn't so bad, it's getting two reeds and bores to agree that really stings.
You can get some wacky harmonies by uncovering one back D and continuing to play the tune on the other bore. It was a lot of fun messing around with these things, someday I must have a proper one made...

really cool sound with the reeds sounding just a twitch out of phase from each other. Sounds like an instrument running through a chorus box. Very good playing too!

I'm curious if double-chanters are made nowadays?

Chris Bayley has an original Taylor or Tayloresque one with keys and I believe he can make them
