Great Whistling on YouTube

Post by OBrien »

Check out this guy: RyanDunsSJ

Search his name on YouTube. He has 11 videos of himself playing a couple of different O'Riordans. Wonderful whistling, but a little too much echo at times.

Run a search for "TinWhistler" on youtube as well. He plays with various other instruments such as a guitar, a sofa and a chair (the last two played as percussion)! Fun listening.
The Walrus

What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?

The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

That low whistle and couch video has become legendary at this point. With the brother drumming on the couch though its easy to overlook the fact that the guy is actually really good.

Why Father Reverb?

Post by danion1234 »

I'm new to this, but I like his music - it is very clean. Is it bad to play with reverb? I think it makes it sound cool.

If used tastefully. That's my opinion at least. This guy Ryan Dunn is really good no doubt, but it sounds like he's playing in a cave.

There's some great stuff on youtube.

Some Cormac Breatnach:

Si Beag, Si Mor

This person who I believe says he's Cormac's nephew, has a ton of Cormac videos.

There's also a good clip of Altan doing The Sunset with Ciarán Tourish on whistle.

Taste

Post by danion1234 »

I guess that's the funny thing about taste. I like the reverb effect. Apart from Kevin Crawford and Mike McGoldrick, the other whistle players on YouTube have poor tone. I find the reverb to give it a crisp sound that is quite pleasant; not unlike many other instances, like the Brian Hughes recordings or even Joanie Madden - I know they all use effects pedals.
