Thought some of the Mandolinists here might like to know that 'Aiden Crossey' has compiled an extensive resource of mp3s featuring various musicians playing Irish and Scottish music on mandolin, with some Tenor Banjo too.
These are free to download and many of the tunes have been specially recorded for this project, so are unavailable elsewhere.
A very worthwhile venture which will be appreciated by all mandolin enthusiasts everywhere, I'm sure.

Also, I recently stumbled upon (at the iTunes store) a mandolin player
named Michael Kerry. His CD is called "The Rocky Road". Wow, what a really nice, clean style. Great sounding Gibson A mandolin, too.
This is a similar style to Marla Fibish and Susan Spurlock (who are exceptional players but basically un-recorded).
I've only downloaded Tom Billy's/Silver Spire so far. Some great playing there. Good clean mandolin picking is almost better than listening to good fiddle playing!! Craig definitely has the touch. I like his little delays, slipping ins from below, and hammers. Oh, nice triplets. The recording is great too. I like the "split delay" or whatever you call that effect used on the mando.

Just listened to La Partida" a Venezuelan waltz. Gotta learn that one! I play a fun waltz called "Indifference" which is kinda in the same vein, but gypsy music.

That site is excellent! I've been on it several times. I've only been playing Mandolin sort of on the side for about three years or so and this site has helped quite a bit with picking up some tunes. There is also a site called the Mandolin Cafe. I think it's mandolincafe.com. It has a treasure of chords and tabs for hundreds of jigs, reels, hornpipes, bluegrass etc... It's a gold mine!

In listening to the sound clips I hear clean tripletts where each note is sounded. This is difficult to do on the mandolin and I admire these
players for pulling it off.
I have also found that at high speeds, a backstitch ornament works well. This is similar to the percusive (stacatto) backstich played on the Uilleann pipes, or the percusive bowed triplett that a fiddler (like Tommy Peoples) plays. That ornament is quite effective on the mandolin IMHO. I don't know why more players aren't using it. Tenor banjo players seems to like it too. Any thoughts?
Our band travelled out of town this weekend to play for a contra dance. We played La Partida (mandolin, Spanish guitar, string bass) for one of the Waltzes and the dancers went nuts over it. They wanted to know where it came from and where I learned it, etc. I told them "over the internet."
