Studying the Dark Arts :)

Post by peeplj »

I am off work this week to attend a class in UNIX Performance & Tuning.

Last week, when a vendor inquired as to whether I was taking any training soon, I told him I was signed up for this class.

His reply was a classic: "Oh my! You're studying the Dark Arts." :o

Just had to share that!

The Eunichs Teckies are a dark and mysterious order.

This class isn't down my way again, is it?

I am deeply impressed and jealous of anyone who can actually understand Unix/Linux at a deeper level. Everytime I tried doing aything important, like installing Subversion and Samba and making it work, I had to give up and use Windows instead. Things are different in Linux distributions, so something that might work on Red Hat won't necessarily work on Ubuntu for example. Everything seems to be harder to do and this eventually irritates me and push me back to Windows. Linux/Unix is a pain in my arse and I know I should learn it well, as most of the stuff I program is with open source software that runs on Linux. Oh well... :sniffle: good luck with your class :-)

I guess that's why people take a step back when I tell them what my husband does for a living.

When people ask I tell them my husband works in IT.
A common response is, "oh, he's a programmer?"

Then I say, "no, he's a UNIX systems administrator."

He enjoys getting to play with the toys
but the people he plays with all seem to be idiots.
You don't seem to be one of those, peeplj.
Enjoy the game!

When I saw dark arts in the thread title, I was expecting a thread on learning to play the recorder.

Unless things have changed dramatically since I took this course, you may be in for a bit of a let-down. Unix tuning mostly involves keeping das Kottopikkin hands in der pokkets. This isn't so much a mystery as it is avoiding quick changes, observing trends, and then monitoring the effects of each change over a long period of time, just to make sure you haven't made things worse. The cardinal rule is to remember that every parm change you make affects at least three other parms. Touching anything can have far-reaching, unintended effects. Enjoy!

So it's kind of like foreplay when you forgot the condoms?

:D

It's my opinion - highly regarded (and sometimes not) by me. Peace y'all.

Nah, this time it's a RAIL online class...taken over the Internet. I do hope to get back up to that part of the country again one day, though: very pretty country, and very friendly people. It felt a lot like home. :)

That's what they pays me for. :D

Seriously, though, I often get handed performance issues to figure out, and I'm hoping this class will help. So far it looks much better than the system and network "troubleshooting" class I took last year--that class was both a waste and a sick joke. Anybody on my team could have taught that class and done a better job than the bozo whose job it was to teach it.

Trust me, it all depends on who you ask. I reckon I get by. :)

Anyhow, best wishes to all. I guess I better go play my recorder and study up for tomorrow.

Hmmmm...I don't think I've ever had to sign a class attendance form in blood before! What's up with that?!? :boggle:

A my workplace, they are such computer neophytes that my bootable knoppix CD makes them back into corners and cower.
