geek help: camera file transfer

Post by BillChin »

On my new computer with Win XP, I can't transfer files to the camera's SD memory card. The old computer with WIn 98 did so fine. I can transfer files from the camera to the hard disk. I can even delete files on the camera's card using MY COMPUTER.

What I can't do is send files from the computer to the SD card. I want to do this so I can take the card to the drug store and print out.

I did some searches and the answers are a jumbled mess. Several people suggest buying a card reader. Some suggest driver or other types of arcane fixes. Please help if you have any insight into this problem. Thanks.

Can you give more specifics? What kind of camera?
What happens when you try to copy files, does it go to the
camera memory and not the SD card, or does nothing at all
happen?

(Really, a card reader's the best option, but this might be doable.)

Something like this
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item(11 ... riter.aspx
should do the trick.

It's my opinion - highly regarded (and sometimes not) by me. Peace y'all.

I can't speak for your local area, but many places that print photos here will accept a file transfer of your picture files over the internet, saving you the trip and the loading of your memory stick. Perhaps there is something similar available in your neighbourhood.

I can't do it either and I don't know why. My camera is an Olympus and it uses xD cards, and I have XP. It's no big deal really, as I just put the pics I want to take to the print emporium on to a CD-R. Can't you just do this?

Bill, Windows XP isn't any less capable than Windows '98.

Are you using Windows Explorer to transfer the files or a separate utility program?

I have an older Olympus camera that connects with a USB cable and it works on several different computers (running XP) without special drivers.

Unless you have some obscure memory card, Windows should treat it like any removable drive.

Steve.... same thing. It surprises me you can download but not upload. I've done it with pictures a few times. I've never tried it, but you should be able to store any type of data on those cards and upload/download through your connection to the camera.

I still want to know what these guys mean by "doesn't work"?
You're not going to be able to see the pics on the camera if
they've been given a file name that the camera doesn't expect.
So, if you're expecting to see it on the camera and you can't,
that's not proof that the transfer didn't work...

Any chance you can give us a more detailed story, Bill?

I tried using copy and paste using "my computer" as if the camera is an external storage device. This worked fine on the old computer. It also worked fine when hooking up the old Kodak camera to another computer. I also tried using export on Picasa software.

At this point, I think some kind of USB driver update or fix is most likely. The camera is an older Kodak with 1.1 USB. Usually there is a folder, DCIM or some such on the camera. On the new computer, it just shows the camera. Properties doesn't help, neither does any of the other options. I am able to transfer from and see files on the camera. I am able to delete files from the camera. I can not copy to the camera, perhaps because it can get the full path.

What I mean by "doesn't work" is that there is nothing I can do to get a file from the hard drive to the camera's SD card. Copy, export, click and drag, properties, open, do nothing useful. It's not the camera, as I did just fine writing files from another computer to the camera. It is something to do with Windows.

So, when you plug in your camera and bring up My Computer,
you don't see anything called "Removable Disk", with a drive letter
like F: that you could click on? That does sound like it might be
a driver issue, but the camera's driver rather than any USB drivers.
If you haven't already, go to the Kodak support page and see if you
can find your camera model. Maybe Kodak has addressed the issue
already...

I tried one of the simplier fixes, uninstalling the driver and having Windows XP automatically re-recognize the device. Didn't work.

I have a question: is the old File Manager program gone in XP? The camera opens up in a Windows Explorer box. There used to be a checkbox to view my Desktop as a Webpage, that seems the default now.

This problem is annoying me. For now I think I have reached the point of giving up for now. Windows. Microsoft. Sigh.

Yep default...View/Customise folder will allow you to change it. I'd be more specific but the spouse has the XP box, my memory is not good and I can not see what I'm tyoing given this monitor.
