Gallagher set almost here!

Post by tommyk »

Seth Gallagher told me last week that my half set would be ready in "about two weeks".

Half set - key of D
ebony / nickel silver/silver
4 keys
stop key
mammoth ivory mounts
trumpet-style bass drone end
extra "A" drone
custom bellows by Jim Schaefer

I "can't wait"!

Gas I'll take - it gets expensive with my commute to work everyday.

Air I have - I profess for a living, so the hot air is already present!

By the way, what's the word on taking pipes on planes?
I have the chance to do that for a week in Daytona (flight: Lancaster, PA to Orlando, FL to Daytona, FL) this year but don't know if I should.
I could "carry on" them.

And is the worry about ivory on pipes only pertaining to international flights - and then only to certain countries?

Always carry on your pipes, never EVER allow them to be checked into cargo. If your mounts are mammoth ivory, there really shouldn't be a problem... but obtaining a cites certificate is never a bad idea.

BTW, more info here... really, there is a reason for this announcement...

"#6) I'm travelling with my pipes, can I carry them on the plane?

Yes, the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) has negotiated with the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) to secure the right for any musicians to carry on their instruments on airline flights.

You also need a case which is appropriate for carry on luggage (see next topic).

The AFM recommend that you print a copy of the letter of agreement and carry it with you, being prepared to show it to security personnel should there be a problem. Below is a link to the AFM website. Go to that page, and click on "AFM wins right to carry on instruments" to download a copy of the agreement in Adobe Acrobat Format.

I believe this only applies to elephant ivory. Customs can identify the type of ivory from the grain. However, it wouldn't hurt to carry with you a copy of Seth's invoice stating that it's mammoth ivory.

You may with to ask Seth about any particular care that mammoth ivory requires when being transported. I'm thinking the level of humidity inside the aircraft - would that crack the ivory?

Thanks, PJ (and everyone);
My case (Cedar Creek) has a built-in hygrometer/thermometer and I'm thinking of getting one of these for it:

I imagine that would keep it on the safe side.

It is a shame when a session turns into a brawl.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

My most-recent adventure in this was flying back from the St. Louis Tionol. We got bumped to a smaller (~50 seat) plane and it was announced that all carryon luggage larger than a laptop would have to be checked. I explained about my pipes and all and after a few tense moments the desk person said that, if the case fit overhead, then I could carry them on. Fortunately, I was toting a very slender (Rogge) flightcase and it j-u-s-t fit. FFFyyyyeewwww! The overheads had about 10" clearance.

Relieved,
T

I have a case made by morordian (sp?). It's a soft case UNDER the inches that are deemed "max" by WHOMEVERD-FECK. I can fit a full set w/bellows, 4pc flute and concertina in it and have never been hasseled. Also, when I go to the check in desk I say that I must go in w/ special needs and I fake a limp (no sh#t). Right after I turn the corner, I skip like a loopy puppy all the way down to the plane. Works every bleedin' time. Search the case maker if your interested- He'll make anything custom fer ye. Peter Hoffman is his name.

oh ya I once fit 2 full sets D and B (no bellows) tina, and flute...no probs
