Those "rats" look suspiciously like their less dignified, but in this case, funnier, cousins, gerbils. Gerbils have no pride. Rats, would of course, never settle for a little bit of a nosh. Being gourmands (and much more intelligent), they would climb the string, knock the top off their cage, and take the whole block of cheese.
