URLs in Microsoft Word

Post by Jack »

This is something that's bugged me a lot. When you're making a works cited page using Microsoft Word, and you are citing a webpage, the URL is supposed to appear like this "<http://vvvvvv.chiffandfipple.com>." but with actual Ws instead of Vs. It's not supposed to turn blue and it's not supposed to be automatically underlined, but I can never figure out how to get it NOT to turn blue and NOT to get underlined automatically.

None of my professors every say anything, because everybody turns in papers where the URLs automatically get formatted that way, but since they're not really supposed to, if there's a way to make them NOT turn blue and get underlined automatically, I'd appreciate hearing it.

That is all.

I don't know about automatically - but you could always go back and highlight the area, turn off the underline and make the text black instead of blue.

I figured that much...but when you have 20 URLs you're citing, that's a bunch of work, and I'm quite lazy... ;)

Put your cursor anywhere over the link, right click, and then select "Remove hyperlink." Then you just have to underline it the old-fashioned way.

Oops. Misunderstood; thought you wanted them underlined. So just do the right click thing and the underlines will disappear.

There's a way to prevent Word from doing this. This is how you do it in the current version of Word. It may be a bit different with earlier versions.

Under the Tools menu, select Auto-Correct Options.

Select the Auto-Format tab.

Uncheck "Internet and Network Paths with hyperlinks."

Then select the Auto-Format as you type tab.

Uncheck "Internet and Network Paths with Hyperlinks."

I think that'll work.

Nah, thank YOU. That feature has annoyed me for awhile and so your message prompted me to look at solutions.

I am kinda brilliant, though.

I think you can also just press Undo (Ctrl Z) immediately after it's hyperlinked, and it will undo the link but not the typing. This works for email address hyperlinking.
