shops for trad. musical instruments in Co. Kerry wanted
Hello there,
friends of mine come over to the island in early March this year. Both are interested in traditional irish instruments like Uilleann pipes, whistles, bodhrans. They'll stay in the Dingle Bay near Killorglin.
Do you have any idea where they can find above mentioned things?
Best
Alex

Cillian O'Briain, a pipemaker, has a shop that they can visit in Dingle. He is one shop in a Crafts 'shopping centre' for people with small businesses that need studio space, etc -artists, craftsman, etc. He will also have whistles. If he cannot supply pipes, an order can be placed or he might re-direct you to someone else.
Cillian is a great player too so they might ask when he plays in the area.

My advise would be get hold of a 06 area golden pages when your friends arrive in Killorglin (where they are staying will have one )and go to "Musical Instruments"as there are loads of shops in the Kerry area .
Buskers in Tralee is very good for trad instruments of all kinds (except pipes ).There are three pipemakers in the kerry area I know of ,they are Cillian O,Brian of Dingle,Mark Donohoe in Castlemaine and Mick Dooley in Tralee
By the way Killorglin is about one hours drive from Dingle

Yeah, Andrea's very nice. Her bodhrans are pretty good...if you're into that sort of thing...
Cillian's workshop is in a complex of shops called "Ceardlann Na Coille" about 1 km or so outside of town. Just follow Strand St. out of town and it should be on the right. I had heard that Cillian had actually closed down the "shop" portion of his place and was using the entire space for pipemaking. It used to be divided in half with the pipemaking stuff in the back and a small shop in front that sold books, CDs, whistles, a few flutes, and--once in a blue moon (don't get yer hopes up)--one of his practice sets. Anyway, I haven't been back to Dingle in several years, so I don't know if he's still selling things in the shop or not. Regardless, he's a pretty friendly guy, so if your friends stopped by, he'd probably be okay with them having a look around...Don't quote me on that, though.
Be sure your friends stop by Oifig An Cheoil ("The Music Office") on Dykegate Lane. It's sometimes staffed by a real-live local musician who can answer questions, but most of the time nobody's around. They do have a schedule on their door showing what regular traditional music events are going on around town. If Cillian or Eoin Duignan are playing down at An Droichead Beag, go see them!

Thanks and regards

Here's a recent article about COB posted by rorybbellows. It mentions that the craft centre is being sold and COB will be setting up his workshop elsewhere.

Alexander, here is NPU's list of pipemakers. Bear in mind that a few of them are nolonger making pipes... ie. Davy Stephenson, Dave Williams (R.I.P.)... but your friend has quite a few others to chose from here. Good luck!
