Whistleless whistling

Post by miffle »

When I find myself without my instrument but with a tune running through my head, I usually whistle it. Frequently, I will whistle (by mouth) variations and ornamentations before I try them on the whistle.

How common is this occurrence among us?

Sometimes I will whistle a tune by mouth that I have heard many times.
But I am unable to look at written music and whistle that by mouth.
So the only way I can learn a new tune is to hear it first.

I lilt tunes in my head frequently, and I have a habit of "playing" pens at work.

I guess , looking at the poll , that this is relatively common. What you are doing pretty well describes my own experiences. I get a tune "running around" in my head. I'll just start whistling it ... either by mouth or with the first whistle I can lay my hands on !!

I wonder how wide a range is possible or common with just mouth whistling?

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Someone once posted here that you haven't learned a tune until you can whistle it. So sometimes when I'm trying to learn a tune I try to learn to whistle it.

I'm with Tintin...I lilt tunes a lot (Eileen Oge/Pride of Petravore has been stuck in my head for DAYS) and subject my pens to fingering through the tunes as well...sometimes without even realzing what I'm doing.

I used to do that a lot when I played clarinet...works a lot better for whistle since I don't have to hit imaginery keys...

I'm with the lilters. ;) I've tried whistling tunes a couple of times, but I just don't have the
range and accuracy I need for mouth-whistling tunes. Lilting, on the other hand, is something
I do both deliberately when trying to get my mind around a tune and unconsciously when
a tune is running around in my head.

I also whistle tunes I am trying to learn. I often whistle along with a CD or the radio if it is a tune I like and would like to learn.

When my repertoire I feel I should grow,
I pucker my lips and I blow.
It's toots from the labium,
cram tunes in my cranium.
Later whistling, the tune I will know.

I couldn't mouth whistle until I was in the third grade. I remember working on the skill on the schoolbus--"Go Down Moses," I think it was...
I still got it wrong though. To this day I can only whistle by sucking in, not by blowing out. I rarely do it.
