Hello. I'm a 16-year-old high school student. For an art project, I have chosen to create a working Irish tin whistle, and I'm having trouble finding guides to making them. Can anybody give me the names of some good whistle crafting books, or some online resources? Thanks in advance,
Catch.
Making a tin whistle
You can probably get more response over on the whistle board, but let me direct you to the "Bloody Hand Whistle Plans" on the main C & F site - the direct URL is
http://www.geocities.com/dwisely/bloodyhand.htm
That should be enough to get you going. However, that one reuses a commercial head (I think you can buy the Sweetone heads needed directly from the whistle shop for less than the complete whistle, but Sweetones are cheap even if you can't).
If you have to build EVERYTHING from scratch, it might be easier to go the Clarke original route (a sheet of tin rolled around a wooden fipple plug), though I suspect it'll be a lot easier to get one that makes noise than one that's actually more or less in tune.
Or you could drop a line to Bill Whedon at Serpent Music http://www.serpentmusic.com to ask if you can copy one of his Polly whistle designs - I'm sure other whistlesmiths would also help, but I know Bill best and think his Pollys would be one of the easier designs to copy yourself (thin copper tubing and plastic water pipe).
Enough ideas?
