Louis McManus d. 12/12/2004 * Updated - Memorial Concert *

Post by StevieJ »

I have just learned that Louis McManus has passed away at the age of 48.

It's a sad loss for the world of music. But at least the suffering he endured in the last few years of this life is over for him.

I wrote about Louis early last year in this topic: http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=9879. Many of you helped out by buying the compilation CD of his playing, for which his wife and family are very grateful.

You can read more about him and listen to clips from the CD at http://www.louismcmanus.com. If any of you would like to send condolences to his widow, Max, and his parents, Louis Snr and Nora, there is an address on that page.

Thanks
Steve

This is very sad news. Although it's hard to measure another's suffering, this may be a blessing for Louis and those closest to him. His loss is great but, in truth, he was lost to the world of music as an active contributor some time ago.

He leaves an impressive legacy, even though it is only a fraction of what he might have left had his career been managed differently. ('Career' seems a funny word to use when talking about Louis.) With luck, more of his unissued recordings will be made available in the coming years.

Farewell to a great musician. He is perhaps the finest mandolin player I have heard.

Very sad news, Steve; I will pass along my condolences to his family. I'm so glad you introduced Louis to all of us and helped spread the power of his touch: his music shimmers with his personality, of course, but the stories you've collected and shared on his website add another colorful dimension and make today's sad news feel all the more personal a loss.
