Bagpipes (GHB) in Wyoming, 1909

Post by noshinchan »

Just found an interesting quote in a 1909 letter of a woman named Stewart, who married Mr. Clyde Stewart after moving to Wyoming to be his housekeeper. "Mr. Stewart is absolutely no trouble, for as soon as he has his meals he retires to his room and plays on his bagpipe, only he calls it his "bugpeep." It is "The Campbells are Coming" with variations, at intervals, all day long and from seven till eleven at night. Sometimes I wish they would make haste and get here."

That reminds me . . . and I do realize that this is an uilleann pipe forum . . .

Anyone read A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean? It takes place in early-1900s Montana, and it's got some piping in it. I think, if I recall correctly, the movie version also had something like a highland games in it.

I wonder how much piping there was in the Victorian and Immediately-Post-Victorian Pacific Northwest.

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

Also a BOOK. That's a bunch of paper with writing on it, the sheets of which have been glued together in such a way that you can read it and not lose pages.

Dufus. :D

I've seen those! You flick the corners of the pages with your thumb and a little cartoon character dances around. Very useful, that. A chick flick flick. :D

Yeah, I know. I only post on the UP forum when there is a GHB thread.

"A River Runs Through It" the movie: a GHB piper plays Mairi's Wedding (poorly but perhaps historically accurate) at a fair. I think Brad Pitt's character should have played the GHB. Then there would be either leagues of women who think the GHB is sexy or leagues of women who quit thinking Brad Pitt is sexy. Either way, I would win.

Cheers,
Aaron
