Q: Silkstone low D

Post by glauber »

Does anyone here have any experience with the Silkstone low D whistle? I'm thinking of getting one, and i'd appreciate any comments (PM me if you have anything you'd rather not say in public).

I have a Silkstone alloy high D and like it a lot.

Thanks,

g

Edit note: i noticed that there is a PVC Silkstone low D too. I was looking at the aluminum one. Any experiences with that are also wellcome.

I agree that the high d is a mighty whistle. It's a bit louder than some like, but it has a strong and full tone. I find the Low D, though, to be rather run-of-the mill and uninteresting.

All I can say is this:

Choosing a low D whistle is a tricky and often vexing challenge in a whistler's life. I can only recommend being careful, soliciting competent advice and then making up your own mind. Remember that you will be playing the whistle for years, perhaps a life-time. Low Ds are very different, one from the other, and predilection and indiosyncracy are perhaps the most important factors in choosing one. There are, however, certain universally recommended low whistles, that the serious player will end up with anyway.

good luck choosing.

Ewige Blumenkraft! Fnord!

I hear you. It's just that i like my high d so much, and Paul is a great guy,and the low D looks extra kool and it's tuneable. But i may go over that way too eventually.

Hi Glauber ... I'm going to fight the tide here. I like my Silkstone Alloy Low D. It's easy to play -- and as a newbie on the low D as well as here, that's a major plus for me. In my opinion (which isn't much here, I'm sure) the tone in the lower octave is beautiful, 2nd octave a little more 'airish' (my fault most likely), reaches the 3rd octave D nicely. I enjoy playing this whistle. The whistle is a beautiful instrument -- and a handy weapon, if needed. :D Since you live in Illinois, are you close enough to Bloomington to visit The Whistle Shop? I bet Thom would let you try one out before you make your decision.

Enjoy your search ....

OK, Bloomfield, you stink! How's that? It hurt to do, but since you requested it.

I flame because I love....
