......... and the next whistle will be?

Post by Stu H »

Most of us will spend some time planning our next whistling purchace. I know that mine is going to be bright, shiny, Bb & from North of the Border.

So the question is ..... what is next on your list?
If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it's probably me - playing a whistle!

I just ordered a "bright and shiny" D from north of the border myself on Monday!!
I don't think I can wait 8-10 weeks!

Overton! There are several I *need* and I have hopes of making it to Europe to visit Colin's shop and try some out. Let's see: D+C or Modal D, a Bb, low G or F.... I've started saving up.

I have a Serpent Village Smithy D on the way. Since I have aluminum, brass, and PVC, I thought I should go for steel. I'm thinking of trying gun bluing on it.

Next I guess I'll try wood--probably a Busman, though I'm wondering if I don't have enough soprano Ds already. Then, maybe high G and E Elf Songs. That should hold me for a while.

I went to a clawhammer banjo workshop on Sunday and came very close to spending $275 on a banjo (which is about as inexpensive as they come), but I restrained myself by thinking about the whistles that I haven't gotten yet.

I'm strictly lo-fi and low-budget... My next purchases will be Nickel Feadog, one in C and another D to back up the one I got last week. After that, a natural tin-coloured Sweetone D. I have an unpainted C which is great, but my blue D sounds less clear, so I suspect the paint takes a tiny edge of the brightness of tone.

Oh, and after *that*, a brace of padded 2-whistle cases from bigwhistle.co.uk! :)

I'm going through a heavy black/silver colour period just now.

Probably a couple of Syns, a Db and perhaps a B. Sooner or later, probably a Burke composite low E. Perhaps some new Abell tubes in 'in between' keys not available until recently. (I'm mainly filling in keys in which I don't already have at least one whistle.) More of Daniel Bingamon's modal whistles.

The only whistle which would be in a key in which I already have plenty and which is high on the list is a Sindt Eb. I love Sindts and have D, C and an A/Bb set. I've heard the Ebs might be the best of them all so I'm sure I'll pick one up eventually, despite having Overton, Abell, Generation and Susato Ebs all of which I like a lot.

OT digression: hey Buddhu, does your avatar feature a doctored version of the photo of the Beast, or is that a cunning mock-up? Whichever, I think it would be more frightening without the black eyes.

NEXT one?

With--let me see--four on the way, between new acquisitions and those back from revoicing, I'm so prompt to rush out to the gate when I hear the La Poste van, that the mailmaid probably thinks I have a crush on her...

So the next one... will be homegrown.

i have a john sindt suprano C on order- that will be about a year i think.
otherwise i am good. i keep wanting a burke D, but that will have to wait. i don't love suprano Ds enough to justify the outlay at this point. (though people are telling me that the burke D may change my mind on that)

Tell us something.: I've been playing whistle for a very long time, but never seem to get any better than I was about 10 years ago. I'm okay with that. :)

I've got an order in for an Overton Alto F that should be ready in a few weeks, a Gary Humphrey complete whistle (not just a head!) on it's way in the USPS, and a Top Secret Futuristic Materials Whistle (which will, of course, allow me to communicate more clearly with the Crystal People)that Serp...er...Bill Whedon is working on.

However, I really need to get a Casey Burns Folk Flute (not a whistle...) sometime soon.

I also like the looks of the Lon Dubh by Pat O'Dwyer & Aidan McNamara, but I suspect it's probably enough like a Rose that I wouldn't keep it (not at that price anyway).

I am glad that many of you, like me, see these as needs and not wants!

Presently, I have only lower-end whistles (Susatos, Clarks and Generations) so am saving up for my first WOW! whistle - a brass Burke Pro Session D. :D

I have three or four on order, depending on how you view a combo:

Hoover aluminum/Whitecap Bb
Hoover aluminum/Whitecap Low G
Elf Song C/D Combo (copper w/oak fipple plug)

This will be my best WhOA treatment yet. :D
