Words to - That Night in Bethlehem?

Post by cowtime »

Does anyone know where I can find the words to That Night in Bethlehem?
I heard it today in Gaelic on the radio, and realized that it's on my copy of the Chieftain's Bells of Dublin. I can play the tune by ear, but would like to find the words written out somewhere. It might be nice for our choir to do for our Christmas Eve service.

And eyes as gray as icicle fangs measure stranger
For size, honesty, and intent."

And in case you needed them in English...

Don Oiche Ud I mBeithil
Translated by Seán MacRéamoinn

I sing of a night in Bethlehem
A night as bright as dawn
I sing of that night in Bethlehem
The night the Word was born

The skies are glowing gaily
The earth in white is dressed
See Jesus in the cradle
Drink deep in His mother's breast

And there on a lonely hillside
The shepherds bow down in fear
When the heavens open brightly
And God's message rings out so clear

Glory now to the Father
In all the heavens high
And peace to His friends on earth below
Is all the angels cry

Stangely enough, you can sing "O little town of Bethlehem" to it, and I reckon it sounds great.

The music is also in Bill Ochs' book (in D).

In my copy, the music is notated in C -- is that just a piece of errata that it should be in D?

I've been tracking down the words and music on Mudcat.

You'll get the words with accents here: http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=15825#143956
and a thread that discusses this and other Christmas carols here: http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?thread ... 28#1062542

The fact that it is noted in D is simply conforming to a convention for noting down tunes among Irish musicians. Generally C (or to be more precise, noting them in any of the keys which work on a C whistle) seems to be better for most singers.
