Yellow Rose of Texas

Post by Chuck_Clark »

Does anyone have a score for this? There're about a dozen on JC's (Trillian) but they're all the same tune and don't sound at all like the song I know.

There's a midi of the only version I know at http://users.erols.com/kfraser/confeder ... wrose.html
There are programs which will convert midis to sheet music.

There's a midi of it as a two part fiddle tune at this address. If you have a program that can copy midis you can get a score of it.

Actually, JC has one that sounds right to me -- the one in 4/4 time in the key of A. All the rest are in 3/4 time and I never heard them before either. Unfortunately, A isn't a good whistle key for this tune; D would be better.

If you have ABC software try this:

X:1
T:Yellow Rose of Texas
M:4/4
L:1/4
K:d
A/2G/2| F A A3/2 A/2| B A2A/2-G/2| F A d3/2 e/2| f3 f| f A A3/2 f/2|\ f e2 d| c3/2 d/2 e f| e3 A/2-G/2| F A A3/2 A/2| B A2 G| F A d3/2 e/2|f3 A| A3/2 g/2 g g|g f2f/2-e/2| d A f3/2 e/2| d3||

Better yet, I'll bet you can work it out by ear. Just start on A.

Thanks guys. I can handle it either way. Laely I've been using Tablature karaoke for MIDI conversions because it seems to be key-independent. It puts it out in tablature form so I don't have to worry about difficult keys.

Very interesting! There's an amusing misprint in the key signature on one of the lines.

amusing key signature

It IS amusing. Also makes the tune sound odd. *chuckle*

The first full bar of the melody part (soprano) in the chorus is different from what I've heard. But I like it! It's a neat variation. I might have to try it that way.

Some admittedly desultory comments about Yellow Rose.

Practically everything Emily Dickenson wrote can be sung to the tune of "The Yellow Rose of Texas."

Try it.

Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.

We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For his civility.

or

This is my letter to the world,
That never wrote to me,--
The simple news that Nature told,
With tender majesty.

Her message is committed
To hands I cannot see;
For love of her, sweet countrymen,
Judge tenderly of me!

Here's some more if you hanker for them -- http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Atrium/60 ... ckense.htm

And let's not forget Moses Rose of Texas, the one man at the Alamo who didn't cross that line in the sand and who hopped it out a back window the night before the battle.

He's Moses Rose of Texas,
And today nobody knows,
He's the one who left the Alamo,
The night before the foe,
Came storming up across the walls,
And killed the men inside,
But Moses Rose of Texas,
Is the one who never died.

Finally, my vote for the best recorded version of this tune (although you'll have to be at least 50 to remember it) -- Stan Freberg's with the "smart alecky Yankee drummer."
