A great list so far.

Anything by the Coehn brothers.
Most of Kubrick's stuff except Barry Lyndon.

The original Lord of the Flies
Angel Heart
The Wild Bunch
Band of Brothers (it may not count but it's still one of my favorites).
King of Hearts
Torch Song Trilogy.

Probably some more but most have been mentioned already.

Great lists so far and I can see a few trips to the video store coming up. One that I haven't seen listed yet is...

Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean version with Peter O'Toole)

After all it won seven academy awards. My wife got it for me for my birthday last week. Amazing cinematography. Really long but really worth watching.

Bladerunner was based (loosely) on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick. Minority Report was another loose adaptation of a P. K. Dick short story.

Nightbreed was an adaptation of a Clive Barker novel but for some reason the title escapes me. I suppose I could cheat and Google it like Martin does but what fun is that? :D

Gettysburg was based on "The Killer Angels" by Shaara (sp?). Good book, good movie. I haven't seen "Gods and Generals" yet, but heard that was good too....

Blackhawk - Why isn't something as extraordinary as the battle at Little Round Top at Gettysburg more widely known?

Have you seen the recent Discovery Channel shows on the re-telling of Custer's last stand, much of it purportedly told from a heretofore suppressed Indian survivor descendant perspective? This presents the battle in a much different light than what I read growing up in Landmark Books, for example. Great show. The presentation re the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae (Gates of Fire) was also terrific, but contained no such new persepectives or surprises.

Oh my god . . . THE funniest show that ever aired. Never get tired of it, putting in a tape and cracking up at the commentary always makes a bad day better.

No one mentioned SPACEBALLS!!!!!!! :D

Airplane one and two are included in my list.

Secret of Roan Inish is beautiful.

Kiki's Delivery Service (Miyazaki) . . . had a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a laser disk. It's out on DVD now and is stunning. Cute story.

And for sheer misery and enlightenment . . . "Girl Interrupted".

Lots of great stuff... I second much of it (too much to re-list) so would just like to add my quirky few:
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Diva
Chocolat
Silent Running-- (SF)... dated, but somehow strangely re-watchable....
Close Encounters...also stands the test of time
The Jose Ferrer version of "Cyrano de Bergerac"
andandand...

Blackhawk!!! A military history buff??? Excellent. Me too.
Have been since I first saw Snoopy fighting the Red Baron and decided to find out exactly what a Sopwith Camel was.

I am amazed. I never thought anyone would guess "The Short Timers". I thought maybe someone would say "Dispatches" which, of course, would be a good guess but incorrect.

PM or email me sometime and we can discuss military history. My wife and kids aren't too interested.

Any particular era you are interested in?

I always thought it was TOO well known. Granted it was an important aspect of the battle but there is a lot more to it then just a heroic defense. There's a whole story and controversy about the whole nature of the way the attack was conducted from the get go. Something that Longstreetophobes love to pick on.

What I think is very UNDER rated and yet another important aspect of the Gettysburg battle is the cavalry skirmish that occured to the east of Gettysburg between Custer with his Michigan boys and Stuart. Custer's troops trounced Stuarts cavalry and kept them from the rear of the Union army. Had the Confederate cavalry been able to get into the rear of the center then it is possible that the infamous Pickett's Charge
would have had a different ending.
