My wife has always found it fascinating that when that phrase is censored,
particularly on TV, we censor the "god" but leave alone the "damned"...

(Unless you were following the Jewish practice of not writing the full name
of G_d. If so, consider my remark directed 180 degrees from your most
excellent personage.)

Well, I think the calf should be named "half-pint" and the cow "Udderly Full"

Those are cute names, but not very Amish.

They tend to choose biblical names for their children and common, simple names for their animals (Nancy, Ben, Henry, Alice, etc.).

Best wishes,
Jerry

My mother still likes to tell the story of my granddad naming a cow after my grandma, who was not pleased. Granddad was baffled because he'd meant it as a compliment; the cow in question was his best milk cow. He ended up giving that cow a different name.

Tell us something.: I play flute, whistle and harp and have been a member on this board for many years. I have tended to be a lurker recently and just posted a response for the first time in quite awhile.

My college boyfriend named his horses after relatives- Myrtle & J.R. Marie the dog was named after his mother. He named a cactus after me- needless to say, the relationship didn't last. Myrtle & Marie would be good farm animal names. My grandfather named all of his cattle- not that he'd tell us what they were because they were beef cattle- but he claimed he named them.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

My maternal grandparents had an older cow that they called "Grandma" - she always had good calves, produced a large amount of milk (for a beef breed), and was both cooperative when hand-milked and willing to feed orphaned/abandoned calves.

But it produced *real* cognitive dissonance for my father when after a visit to the ranch my younger brother listed "seeing Grandpa milk Grandma" as one of the high points.

They're newly married, so it's just Ezra and Mattie.

Schwartzentruper's a common name among that branch of Amish (the "Schwartzentruper Amish," which is the most conservative branch).

Closer down the road are the Herschbergers: Ruben, Caroline and their children, Jacob, Naomi, Jonah, Rachel, Noah, Ananaya, Ruben and Levi.

Best wishes,
Jerry

One of our homes was smack dab in the middle of leased federal grazing land. The rancher who leased the land had a bull name Billy, who was so friendly with my truck there is a bend in the drivers door panel, but when I was a kid one of our Amish neighbors had a bull name Balthazar, a wise name I thought

This evening, I visited with Ezra for a few minutes. I determined that the calf isn't Peter's, but Jacob's (in the dim light the evening we named Betsy, I mistook who was speaking).

I suggested that Jacob name his calf Molly. Ezra indicated that he thought Molly would be a good name for Jacob's calf and would pass the information along to Jacob. He seemed appreciative.

Best wishes,
Jerry,
