I know typing is one of the most useful classes I ever took.

No longer funny in my world... lost too many cats to the coyotes!

I suspect they got my siamese mix. But, I can meow quite convincingly and shoot pretty straight, and have a break from school coming up.... Might be adding tanning hides to the DIY list in another post.

I know that this is an American Cocker Spaniel

This breed became popular beginning in the '50s and now most you meet are ill tempered creatures from indiscriminate back yard breeders intrested only in making a buck. Most of these are much larger and bear little resemblance to the above pictured dog.

I know that this is an English Cocker Spaniel


As you can see, they have a very different conformation- and a very different temperament- more like your typical hunting dog.

I know that mixed breeds as a group are no healthier than pure breeds. Either can have individuals that are virtually free of health problems. I know that with purebreds, you can sometimes predict potential health related issues.

I know that NO specific breed is the only" best dog in the world."

I know that, for me (everyone has their own version of "the best dog") Skye Terriers are the best dogs in the world.

#1. Border collie crosses are the best dogs.

Really? More than pure bred border collies?

Yes. Unless you own actual sheep.

Borders are so smart that if you aren't planning on doing Very Interesting Things all day long with your dog, it's likely to get bored with solving differential equations in its head and to trash your couch from time to time. Border crosses are still smart, but a touch less neurotic. Usually.

For years the border collie folks staved off the American Kennel Club's desire to set up a breed standard, so there *was* nothing like 'purebred' border. The AKC has ruined many a breed, so this was a Good Thing. I understand that they've finally got their way.

Before then, what defined a border was success in sheepdog trials, not adherence to a breed standard list of physical traits or a 'pure' bloodline.

I know that working dogs that actually work, whatever their breed and/or purpose, are pretty stinkin' cool.

When I was in Scotland several years ago, I came across a sheep-dog trial in progress. Truly amazing, those dogs. The sheep, slightly less so.

Tom (whose best friend growing up was a hard-charging, fearless, state-champion black lab who I believe had an honest to goodness sense of humor; who would joyfully risk death, destruction, and pain to retrieve a duck, then, a couple hours later, sneak into my room at night and scare me half to death with a wet nose in the face and a tail thumping against the wall...how I miss her...)
