When I was a kid my mother kept buying old ratty houses, refurbashing them and selling them. She did most of the work herself. She would go to the local hardware store and say "I need (however many she needed) 2 X 4's". The guy (you never saw women working in lumber yards then) would say "There really isn't a 2 X 4; it's a 2 X 31/2" ( some other fractional dimension). He would then continue lecturing her like she didn't know how to look up or down. She finally got so sick of getting the lecture, she would walk in and say "I need the 2X...gee, I can't remember the other dimension!" The guy would ALWAYS say "You mean a 2 X 4"? Image
Yea they are 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 which is better than 2x4 if you have to carry a pile of 'em.

I think the sexism in the trades is getting better. My problem is that I start trying to explain something to Mr. or Mrs. Homeowner like they have been building all their lives and their eyes start to glaze over because they don't get the lingo.

So...if there is a new whistle called "Nubby" does that mean I won't need thumb rests anymore??!!

Deb

after reading that - for a split second - I thought I had come up with a brilliant idea. I was on my way to the patent office when I realized someone may have beaten me to it.

There is already someone making an ergonomic whistle (where the holes are not in a streight line)and one maker has a goose neck section for their really low whistles, so you don't have to bury your chin in your chest or hold your arms up.

It probably wouldn't be cheap but wouldn't it be cool to make one that was elyptical(like a banana) whith the offset holes? I don't see how it could affect the sound too much. Maybe it would, and that would be good, I don't know.

The show is interesting. Do you think Tapal will ever lighten up like Spock?

Laura

_____

I think Tapal is going to end up having a torrid love affair with the winey engineer and the captain will be very crushed and jealous, putting a interesting spin on the series. Image

[/quote]

Aha! You got that impression also. What about the weapons specialist? I believe his name is Malcolm. Did you see the episode when he got smashed? He has the hots for Tapal also. My son is looking over my shoulder. The name of the engineer is Tripp.

Edited for correction of name. My son got the Tv guide August edition out and we are both spelling the name wrong. It is spelled T'Pol.

I stand corrected again and Trip is spelled with one P... Oh what the heck while my son has the TV guide still out here's all the names.

Captian Jonathan Archer
Sub Cmdr. T'Pol
Chief Engineer Charles "Trip" Tucker III
Lt. Malcolm Reed
Ensign Hoshi
Ensign Travis Mayweather
Dr. Phlox

The T.V. guide has a picture of T'pol out of character. It's amazing how different actors can look when they aren't made up.
The new T.V. Guide has a bit about Farscape's new characters and episodes. the new story lines sound cool.

On a completely different topic:

I was recently in Arizona and discovered "Kokopelli" appearently, this is an ancient whistler who would go from villiage to villiage. He would play as he entered a villiage to let the inhabitants know he was coming in peace. He is suppossed to be a symbol of bounty and fertility. The story goes that he would teach the villagers to grow corn. The next morning Kokopelli would be gone but the corn would be 4 ft. high and many of the young women of the villiage would be pregnant.

I got a chuckle out of that. Nobody can resist a good whistle player!

I have a book called

"The Penny Whistle Book" by Robin Williamson
In it he gives a brief background on the Whistle. In it he writes ... 'Cheyenne Indians believed that certain specially potent whistles had infallible charms over women and it was forbidden by the Medieval Church in Europe to serenade with a whistle because it would be irresistible for women to hear that music at night.'

I guess that would also depend on what tune the fella was playing.

Nice site Beth,

Are you considering buying one?
I have thought about it.
The only time I would most likely use it would be at work for cultural history class.
And I do not normally teach that class.

Sometimes I have to justify my investments.
For that price I can pay for my overton that I am patiently waiting for.

What's up with all these new kid's shows?

Pfft.

ps. I'm 17 and I still love Mr.Roger's Neighborhood and Sesame Street. Does that make me a freak?
Wait till you have kids!

This is what is big:
Dora the Explorer
Dexter's Laboritory
The new Justice league
Bob the builder
Basicly anything on cartoon network
PB&J otter
Rollie Pollie Ollie

I like all of these, it sometimes makes me late because I watch them with my kids before I go to work.

Please steer clear of the Barney (I wish he'd go the way of smoochie)

Tellitubbies is awful too.

I can neither confirm nor deny that any of the above play the whistle or have anything to do whith whistling in any form. Although I think Dora the explorer may.

which makes me feel that Spongebob Squarepants must be intended for the more mature audience. I only wish I could find it in my TV guide. Maybe I shoudl just sit and watch cartoons all day one weekend!

I recently saw a puppety show called "Yoho, Ahoy!" or something like that - all about pirates on a ship. The captain of the ship was called Bilge. Anyone familiar with that one?
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that schwing

Actually, I have one, have built one (not too good though), and have several more in varying stages of development. But I don't have the time for woodworking right now. I was involved in wooden flutes before I got into whistles. The one that I bought is for semi-sale - It's gorgeous and I want to keep it; but I kinda need the money; but no one would pay the price I paid for it (I was pretty green at the time) - so I think I'll have it for quite some time.

Martin,
I have seen little of the squarepants, it reminds me of Ren & Stimpy, which gives me the same feeling as watching Fear Factor. I have not seen the pirates show, but with all the cartoon channels on my dish I will get it soon I am sure.

It's purty! At first I thought those dark spots on it were holes. I gotta thinking my goodness how many fingers do you need to play the thing. At a closer look I realized they were beatles. Are they lady bugs?

I'd be tempted to take it off of your hands for a fair price. But alas, I am short on cash and as I mentioned before I need to be prudent with my investments right now.

Now, now, now... don't knock the spongebob show. Those in the fan club would take offense. I am not all that keen on Ren & Stimpy either. Spongebob is not as gross.

Please forgive me if I offended any Ren & Stimpy fans out there.

I have seen the Iron Chef a few times.
It's fun to watch.

Martin,
Spongebob is for kids. Pre-teens love it. As for the more mature audience, It's not like south park. Which I have never watched nor do I care to from just watching the commercials for it.

It does not deal with some adult issues like the Simpsons or King of the Hill.

It's just a fun yet, goofy show that kids and "some" adults love to watch.
