I remember writing to Glenn about Art Benade. For those of you who don't know Art, he was the father of the tonehole formula.
Glenn had mentioned how they used to hang together and he missed his old friend, so today they meet again.

Glenn wrote a lot of poetry, a great craftsman and a good person. He will be missed.

Tell us something.: I became interested in the beauty and versatility of Irish whistles and music over 20 years ago when I first found the Chiff boards. Yes, I do have WHOA, and I love my whistles. :)

Though I know nothing of Glenn personally, and have never played or heard his whistles, I know he contributed so much to the whistle world and I am very sorry for his loss. I will pray for his family.

Glenn will be much missed by this whistlemaker who learned so much from him though remotely. It's hard to imagine how much more was learned in his presence in his shop.

His legacy is one we will long experience in so many ways.

God, receive him and richly bless his family!

i am saddened to hear of glenn's passing. i too will miss him. he one time sent me a water whistle - knowing i had no funds at the time - but believing i would pay him eventually (which i did)..... such trust, to someone he only met through this community, was remarkable. i'll be praying for his family and friends.

Well, here's a couple of tunes I just recorded on a flute I got from Glenn 3 years or so ago. The guy actually sent two flutes for me to choose between, $2000 worth of instruments without my having sent him a dime. I kept this one, not because I could play it, but because it was so damn lovely. I recently sent it back to him to have one of the corks tightened up, and he gave me a tip on tightening up cork (very gentle heating with a match or lighter), and told me what good taste I had to choose this flute and what good care I'd taken of it. Of course, he polished it, re-reamed the bore, and wouldn't accept any payment besides postage. "I do it out of love," is what he said.

So, the two tunes:
http://home.comcast.net/~partello1/farewell.mp3 , "Farewell for evermore," from the Joyce collection seems appropriate

http://home.comcast.net/~partello1/orourke.mp3 , "The O'Rourkes' Feast," a Carolan tune, because I don't think Glenn would want us to be too miserable.

They're both around 1.5-2 MB. Disclaimer: I realize that I'm not a great player (yet); these contain a few rough spots, and they're not rendered in a strictly IrTrad fashion. I hope a little of Glenn's flutemaking abilities come through, though.

Sad news

Post by BD »

I own many water weasels and even though I never met Glen Schultz, I am saddened by the news of his passing. His D and C whistles are the ones I always use when playing in sessions with friends or when playing at the occasional contra dance. His art has brought many hours of joy to my life and I would be pleased if his family knows this. My condolences to his family.

Glenn Schultz... bad news

Post by dopyera »

What a dear man! When I began playing the whistle about 8 years ago, my instructor, Pat O'Scannell recommended a Thin Weasel like her own. I called Glenn, and as per his usual manner, he mailed me a gorgeous tulip wood high D for me to try. He told me, "When it becomes painful to think about returning it, send me a check." He had his check within the week.

It has been pure joy to play this instrument. Playing music on my weasel has given me endless hours of happiness. It has been one of the greatest joys in my life. Wherever I go, it attracts attention and folks often come up and ask about it. I played a couple of sessions at Folklife in Seattle over Memorial Day, and I gave out Glenn's name to several people there. His whistles have touched and enriched many, many people's lives--listeners as well as players. His spirit will continue to sing through every instrument he made.

Thank you, Glenn.

Love and Peace

I've added a memorial to Glenn to the top of the main page at http://www.chiffandfipple.com. Thanks to Paul Busman for the photo from which the image was made.

I just re-read the profile I did on Glenn a few years back at http://www.chiffandfipple.com/glenn.html . Have a look if you haven't already.

Tell us something.: Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Part of what I love about celtic/folk style music is the sound of a handful of handmade instruments that remind me of simpler times.

I've only been whistling since Feb of this year. I did not know the man at all. Yet, I knew of his craft through postings about his whisltes in several places on the internet. I've poured over pages and pages on the Chiff board trying to learn about this wonderful hobby.
It has become evident that this man was an extemely well respected artist. However, the account that resounded to me was his relationship with Paul Busman. When I heard that he not only mentored Paul, but gave him access to his designs I was frankly astounded. I have been around the retail business for nearly 35 years now. To freely show a potential competitor that kind of sharing spirit is remarkable.

Would that the World could find more of these, we would war or hunger no more. Certainly he left a legacy of kindness that is sure to live beyond him.

Go in peace Glenn, I am surely the poorer for never knowing you.

But the sound of your life will live on through all of us that love your instruments!

Glenn was my teacher and my friend.

I first met Glenn several years ago through the internet to ask him how I might make my 4Winds flutes better. ... He cursed me out telling me I needed to give up that nonsense, and then he proceeded to tell far, far more than I had ever hoped.

He even made a special tool for me to help me design my embouchure better. After that, I really enjoyed getting cussed out by that man.

I will miss him very much.

I always intended to get up to Michigan someday and thank Glenn in person for all the priceless advice he so freely gave me when I first started making whistles, but unfortunately I've waited too long.
I had a lot of questions, and Glenn was always there to guide me when I needed him... he saved me from countless headaches and sleepless nights.
Even though we never met, you just couldn't help but love the man... he truly had a gift with words, and was just so friendly and approachable.
Those of you who don't have his book of poetry, do yourself a favor and get a copy... very enjoyable reading.
The world lost someone irreplaceable today... Glenn was one of a kind, and I'm saddened by his passing.
My condolences to his family, and may he rest in peace.
Regards,
Gary Humphrey
