Arbo, the tune isn't familiar to me, but you're sure knocking a good tone out of that flute!

Yes, Henrik Norbeck has it as just "Fahy's", transcribed from Tommy Keane & Jacqueline McCarthy, The Wind among the Reeds (Norbeck hn-reel-693). And Chris Ricker has it as Paddy Fahy's #2, with f-nats and f-sharps alternating (Ricker net6, X:9). Fiddler's Companion also has it as #2:

Added: Aha ... The Session has it as "Hammy Hamilton's". Check the comments for other names, recordings, and settings in D and E:

I think this thread is great, by the way...and I'm amazed at how large it's gotten. Good stuff everybody! :)

Well played james! I really must give this tune a 'Go' at some point.

Another one I just added to the collection.
I think this is from a recording of Peg Mc Grath and Josie Mc Dermott.
I know it as Gilbert Clancy's.

Here's a mazurka from Garry Shannon's first solo album. It's played on a 1-key Noy small-holed Irish flute. I've had the flute for 3 years or so; I recently got it back from having it tweaked a little and having the pounded rings gold-plated. (Silver pounded rings -- bad idea; they're next to impossible to keep clean.) There's a pic of it in that thread. Here's the clip warts and all.

Well played. I enjoyed that! :)

Here's a slightly different take on the same reel, which I know as Sean Ryan's, which I recorded early in 2008 on my Hamilton.

HEY James,
Thanks for putting up that version. I really enjoyed the nice lilt you have going on the tune. I am not completely happy with my take, but since I just learned it I guess it needs some playing through? I learned my version from the playing of Josie McDermott and Peg McGrath. I think it may be one of the Roscommon flute players cds? Thanks for the encouragement. I know it from the recording as Gilbert Clancy's.

hey Chas,

Thanks for posting this tune. Lovely sound from that Noy. I really liked the slides into some of the notes. Good tone. I would venture to say that the rhythm seemed erratic in spots which may have been a result of some of the phrasing, or spots where you chose to take a breath. Keep in mind that I have my own struggles with rhythm and phrasing. Just trying to be constructive, so please view my comments as such. Look forward to hearing some more from you!

Thanks very much, Arbo. It's a tune I love that I've been struggling with for a couple of years. I still have a lot of work to do with it, but it shows off the Noy's character wonderfully.

Cheers,

Charlie, that mazurka is a great tune! I also like the sound of your flute.

As to the tune itself, I would take it a bit slower than that, and maybe work on keeping it very clean. Rhythmically, I think I would come down harder on the second beat of each measure than on the first.

Thanks for posting that!

Well, that was fun! Arbo, you swing the rhythm a lot more than in James' version. I have heard this tune before, and the version that comes to mind is more fluid than both of these somehow, maybe with added transition notes at the end of each phrase. Now I'll have to try it myself.

Jennie,

I had just learned the tune, so I am still working out the setting. I suppose the swing will continue to be a dominate
part of my take however. Perhaps the transition notes will help some? Look forward to hearing your version.

Hi guys n gals. Sorry I haven't been around here much for a while, and I'm not in going to be back as a regular just now either. However, I hope you'll indulge me posting this one up - I was having a good tone day by my standards! There are some pretty obvious fingering/timing/breathing/intonation flubs, though. I thought I'd stick it here as I see you've been mazurka-ing lately. Can't be a mazurka-lurker!

Napper Tandy (redowa)/The Barnacle Redowa/Mrs. Crotty's Waltz

There's info on the tunes on YouTube and you can also see the source I learnt the redowas from - a clip of my old fiddling mate Ben Hall (benhall1).

Amazing tone jem ;)

It happens to me that the days i have a particularly good tone i'm so amazed by it that fingering/timing/breathing/intonation get definitely worse :D

Jem

Good to see you can still make an occasional appearance on this thread.

I Enjoyed your napper tandy set, well played.

I play Mrs.Crotty's with the trip over the mountain, normally on whistle though, not sure why.

You had some nice variations on the tune or a slighgtly different setting.
