Oh YEAH! I've got one of those ivy caps, waterproof, navy blue, that I got in a snooty tack shop (non-western equestrian gear and clothing).
I went to Google's new site that searches for retail goods-- http://www.froogle.com -- and typed "ivy cap" without the quotation marks (but if you use them, it will search for that exact phrase) and found some lovely ones. A bit pricy, I thought, but charming.
Won't keep my ears warm, though.

Now see, the few things I saw on the net were calling these tams. If they're Ivy Caps that's just as well. (Turning red because I feel like I don't know what I'm talking about) the picture you posted (the one without the tassle) is what I'm talking about. I thought the ones with the tassles were "golf hats" then there are the 8/4 hats that look like "news boys"
I'll check out London Fog for my "old man hat" thanks!

Life is good. Hard, but good.
That tam in the picture--it's the most
beautiful thing I've ever seen!
Very beautiful "ivy' caps
can be found in Irish import
stores, which abound in most
cities e.g. chicago, st. louis,
etc. these are a gorgeous
tweed, of which there are
many varieties. These irish
caps are called Donegal caps,
I think.

Bagfed, I'd love to watch you stop one of the old guys and ask him about his hat. I bet he'd be flattered and you'd end up talking for a half-hour--that is, if you ask him the right way.

Good luck in your quest!

In the catalog from "Pipes and Drums" the caps with pleats, and a furry ball on top are sold as Tams. The hats with a short bill, no ball, and seams instead of pleats are listed as "Golf Caps". The short bills on my "Golf Caps" A.K.A. "ivy caps" have snap on them in order to pull the crowns down to snap them down to the low profile.
As I understand it, taxi drivers wear "ivy caps", and pipers wear "Tams".
Someone, please feel free to correct me!

I highly recommend The Village Hat Shop for online purchases.
They have a very impressive selection, and fantastic customer service... reasonable prices too.

I ordered one tonight, being also partial to the style, and also folically challenged while in my 30's.
I always have called them either golf caps or vintage racing/driving caps. Perhaps I'll post a review when I get mine in!

We went straight to the factory and ordered from Hanna Hats of Donegal Ltd. http://www.hannahats.com You can get Donegal caps and skipper caps in both patchwork and tweed, plus tweed hats and even a Holmsian deerstalker.
Their prices include shipping handling and are competitive with any of the on-line importers.
Note: Gonzo has no affiliation with Hanna Hats other than occasionally having one on his head.

Where did you get that hat?
Where did you get that tile?
Isn't it a knobby one,
In just *the* proper style.
I should like to have one,
Just the same as that.
Wherever I go,
They shout "Hello
Where did you get that hat?"
Chorus from the song Where Did You Get that Hat.
