You don't have to go as far as the Southern Clifornia tionol to see and hear lots of different sets and ask for advice -- there's a tionol in the Catskills in a month. Check out www.eastcoastpipers.com. Also, since you are in Massachusetts, you have the Boston Uilleann Pipers group close at hand; they have a Google forum.
